The Stalin Lline by Zwiahel
by Novgorod Volynskiy.
While the right wing of the 5th Army (15 th and 31 th Army Corps) carried out a systematic withdrawal under cover of the rear-guards, on its left-flank the 9th and 19th Mechanized Corps were engaged in heavy delaying actions against the superior forces of the enemy force (III AK Mot with its 13 Pz, 14 Pz and 25 ID Mot) which sought a quick breakthrough towards Kiev.
Till July 04 1941, the 9th Mechanized Corps, was covering the retreat of the 5th Army 's main forces in the south within the area Tsuman, Klevan, Alexandria, halting the strong enemy attacks of the 25 ID (Mot), LAH and 299 ID. On the night of July 5 the 9th Mechanized Corps broke away from the enemy, then carried out a retreat across the river.
Meanwhile the 19th Mechanized Corps with the 1st Armored Brigade and remnants of the 228 Rifle Division, covered the Novohrad-Volynskyi axis. During the period from June 29 to July 3 1941, it conducted heavy fighting with the III AK along the river Horyn, occupying with its 40th Armored Division the area Tuchin, Voskodavy (incl.) Goscha and with its 43 Armored Division Goscha, Velbovno.
On June 29 the commander of the 19th Mechanized Corps launched a counterattack, during which it crossed over to the west bank of the river by Goscha, therefore it reject the German III AK some 5 to 8 kilometers.
By July 01 of 1941, under the pressure of superior forces of the German III AK, the 19th Mechanized Corps moved to the right bank of the river Horyn, holding the enemy attacks there until July 03. On the night of July 04, the enemy managed to seize a bridgehead in the sector of the 43rd Armored Division in the area Agapovka, Zavizov; from there at 07:00 hours and after a strong artillery barrage plus air strikes, the 13 Pz went on the offensive in the direction of Bugryn, Kryluv . On the afternoon of July 4 of 1941, the 14 Pz also went on the offensive and it crossed the river in the area Goryngrad Horyn, Voskodavy, bypassing Goschu from the north.
On the left flank of the 19th Mechanized Corps, infantry and enemy tanks had launched an attack in the direction Lisichi, Annopol, threatening the rear of the 43rd Armored Division. A counter-attack launched with 40 tanks allowed the division to break away from the enemy and begin a withdrawal.
After suffering heavy losses, the 19th Mechanized Corps commander ordered a withdrawal to the river Korchik. On the morning of July 05 1941 the remnants of the 19th Mechanized Corps, chased by the 14 Pz reached the outskirts of Zwiahel and took positions there, reinforced by infantry battalions of the 206 Rifle Division. On July 06 all the enemy attempts in order to take Zwiahel failed.
On July 07 1941, the 14 Pz and the 25 ID (Mot) were reinforced by the 299 ID and on July 08 1941, heavily supported by artillery and airplanes could destroy the forts and nests around Novograd Volyn; meanwhile due south the 13 Pz got across the river by Hulsk.
