Flughafenbetriebskompanien

Overview:

The Flughafenbetriebskompanie´s (FBK) primary duty was repair and service for all the aircraft of a specific unit. The FBK belonged to the various Gruppen of the heavier units, incl. Kampfgeschwader, Sturzkampfgeschwader, Zerstorergeschwader, and various reconnaissance and transport units.

Normally fully motorised, consisted of 150 men, and was divided into 4 platoons (züge) - 3 Betriebszüge and 1 Werkstattzug, and would normally follow the Gruppe around to the various bases.

Initially most Gruppen had 2 FBK 's, but this was changed to one each, after Jan 1943.

1. Flughafenbetriebskompanie KG1

Formed 1 May 1939 in Kolberg. Served with I./KG1. When I./KG1 became III./KG40 in Mar 1941, the 1. FBK-KG1 remained with III./KG40, but there is not record of it ever changing designation. On 10 Jan 1943 became independent as 102. Flughafenbetriebskompanie (Qu).

Reformed 10 Jan 1943 in Germany from 5. FBK-KG4. Disbanded May 1944.

Served with I./KG1 (May 1939 - Mar 1941), III./KG40 (Mar 1941 - Jan 1943) and I./KG1 (Jan 1943 - May 1944)

2. Flughafenbetriebskompanie KG1

Formed 1 May 1939 in Kolberg. Served with I./KG1. When I./KG1 became III./KG40 in Mar 1941, the 2. FBK-KG1 remained with III./KG40, but there is not record of it ever changing designation. On 10 Jan 1943 became independent as 103. Flughafenbetriebskompanie (Qu).

Reformed 10 Jan 1943 in Neuhausen from 4. FBK-KG1. Disbanded May 1944.

Served with I./KG1 (May 1939 - Mar 1941), III./KG40 (Mar 1941 - Jan 1943) and II./KG1 (Jan 1943 - May 1944)

3. Flughafenbetriebskompanie KG1

Formed 10 Jan 1943 in Neuhausen from 5.FBK-KG1, and served with III./KG1. Disbanded Aug 1944(?).

Served with III./KG1 (Jan 1943 - Aug 1944).

4. Flughafenbetriebskompanie KG1

Formed 18 Sep 1939 in Pinnow-Plathe from 1.FBK-KG152, and served with II./KG1. On 10 Jan 1943 redesignated 2.FBK-KG1.

Reformed 10 Jan 1943 in Schaulen from 10.FBK-KG1. Disbanded May 1944.

Served with II./KG1 (Sep 1939 - Jan 1943) and IV./KG1 (Jan 1943 - May 1944)

5. Flughafenbetriebskompanie KG1

Formed 18 Sep 1939 in Pinnow-Plathe from 2.FBK-KG152, and served with II./KG1. On 10 Jan 1943 redesignated 3.FBK-KG1.

Served with II./KG1 (Sep 1939 - Jan 1943).

7. Flughafenbetriebskompanie KG1

Formed Dec 1939 in Burg, and served with III./KG1. Disbanded Mar 1942.

Served with III./KG1 (Dec 1939 - Mar 1942). It is not known what FBK served with III./KG1 between Mar 1942 and Jan 1943.

10. Flughafenbetriebskompanie KG1

Formed Mar 1941 in Munstter-Handorf. On 10 Jan 1943 redesignated 4.FBK-KG1.

Served with IV./KG1 (Mar 1941 - Jan 1943).
