  10th September 1944 MTO - STRATEGIC OPERATIONS (15AF):

The Fifteenth returned to strategic targets in Vienna, as eighty-two B-17s from the 2nd, 99th, and 301st Bomb Groups struck the Lobau Oil Refinery where the Fortresses damaged underground storage tanks, the offices, a pump house, a stabilization plant, and tank cars. Crews observed intense, accurate flak and the 301st lost two B-17s. The remainder of the 5th Bomb Wing, the 97th, 463rd, and 483rd Bomb Groups, attacked the Schwechat oil refinery with seventy-nine B-17s. This raid destroyed several storage tanks and a power plant, and damaged a distillation unit, a stabilization unit, and a lubrication unit in the refinery. Some bombs, however, also hit a factory. Intense, accurate flak accounted for the two aircraft lost, one from the 97th and one from the 483rd Bomb Group. Twenty-four P-38s of the 82nd Fighter Group and forty-three P-51s from the 325th Fighter Group escorted these missions. The 325th claimed nine aircraft destroyed in strafing the airfield at Papa.

The 98th, 376th, and 450th Bomb Groups, with all of the 55th Bomb Wing, hit the Southern Ordnance Depot and a factory area in Vienna with 184 B-24s, escorted by fifty-three P-38s from the 1st and 14th Fighter Groups. Bombing with PFF, the raid damaged work and repair shops and other buildings in the depot, while other bombs hit a locomotive factory, a marshalling yard, and other targets throughout the city. Flak was intense and accurate and the 465th lost four B-24s, the 450th three, and the 98th, 460th, 464th, and 485th Bomb Groups one each. Another, from the 376th, ditched. The 1st Fighter Group also lost a P-38.

Attacking the port of Trieste as an alternate, eighty B-24s from the 449th, 454th, and 459th Bomb Groups, escorted by seventy-three P-51s from the 31st and 52nd Fighter Groups, bombed the port through largely moderate, inaccurate flak. The raid damaged an engine and boiler factory, fuel storage tanks, warehouses, and a merchant vessel. Some bombs also cut tracks and hit sixty freight cars in the marshalling yard.

Cloud cover in southern Germany forced the 455th and 456th Bomb Groups to return with their bombs. Fifty-five B-24s from the 451st and 461st Bomb Groups flew a supply mission to Bron Airfield at Lyon, France.

    • Constituted as 465th Bombardment Group (Heavy) on 19 May 1943. Activated on 1 Aug 1943. Prepared for duty overseas with B-24's. Moved to the Mediterranean theater, Feb-Apr 1944; the air echelon received additional training in Tunisia before joining the ground echelon in Italy. Assigned to Fifteenth AF. Entered combat on 5 May 1944 and served primarily as a strategic bombardment organization until late in Apr 1945. Attacked marshalling yards, dock facilities, oil refineries, oil storage plants, aircraft factories, and other objectives in Italy, France, Germany, Czechoslovakia, Austria, Hungary, and the Balkans. On two different missions - to marshalling yards and an oil refinery at Vienna on 8 Jul 1944 and to steel plants at Friedrichshafen on 3 Aug 1944 - the group bombed its targets despite antiaircraft fire and fighter opposition, being awarded a DUC for each of these attacks. Other operations included bombing troop concentrations and bivouac areas in May 1944 to aid the Partisans in Yugoslavia; attacking enemy troops and supply lines to assist the drive toward Rome, May-Jun 1944; striking bridges, rail lines, and gun emplacements prior to the invasion of Southern France in Aug 1944; bombing rail facilities and rolling stock in Oct 1944 to support the advance of Russian and Rumanian forces in the Balkans; and hitting troops, gun positions, bridges, and supply lines during Apr 1945 in support of Allied forces in northern Italy. Moved to the Caribbean area in Jun 1945. Assigned to Air Transport Command. Inactivated in Trinidad on 31 Jul 1945.

    Consolidated B-24 Liberator - Operators

     

    B-24 Liberator units of the United States Army Air Forces

    This is a list of United States Army Air Forces B-24 Liberator combat units during World War II including variants and other historical information. Heavy bomber training organizations primarily under II Bomber Command in the United States and non-combat units are not included.

    The USAAF took delivery of its first B-24As in June 1941, although the B-24D was the first production model delivered in quantity in July 1942. B-24s were assigned to every combat Air Force; at peak inventory, the USAAF had 6,043 B-24 Liberators operating worldwide in September 1944.

    Following the end of World War II, the Liberator was rapidly withdrawn from USAAF service, being replaced by the Boeing B-29 Superfortress. Literally thousands of Liberators were flown to various disposal units where they were cut up for scrap. Some brand-new late-production B-24Ms from Convair/San Diego and Ford/Willow Run were flown directly from the factory to various reclamation sites such as the scrapyard at RFC Kingman, Arizona in 1945, as the war in Europe had ended and B-29s were doing most of the long-range bombing work in the Pacific.

    Only a few Liberators were still around when the United States Air Force was formed in 1947, most of them being used for various research purposes. The last USAF Liberator, a Ford EZB-24M-20-FO serial number 44-51228 used by the Aeronautical Icing Research Laboratory for ice research, was struck off the rolls in 1953. For a time, it was on display at Lackland AFB, Texas, with the armament and gunner positions restored. It is currently at the American Museum at Duxford Aerodrome, England painted as 44-50492, a B-24M that was assigned to the 392d Bombardment Group, 578th Bombardment Squadron.

    Ninth Air Force

    IX Bomber Command operated Liberators from airfields in Egypt; Libya and Tunisia during the Western Desert Campaign (1942–1943). Transferred B-24s to Twelfth Air Force in October 1943; reassigned to England to become tactical air force supporting American First Army (IX Tactical Air Command), Third Army (XIX Tactical Air Command), and Ninth Army (XXIX Tactical Air Command).
