Photos 41-34777 Martin B-26C-5-MO Marauder A crashed B-26C Marauder (serial number 41-34777) nicknamed "Black Fury" of the 456th Bomb Squadron, 323rd Bomb Group, 19 August 1943. Official caption on image: "(GAD-20-1-323)(19-8-43)(A/C No. 41-34777)(Type B-26C6)." The aircraft appears to have "bellied it in"-a wheels up crash landing. The aircrew in emergency landings preferred to belly it in rather than jumping with their parachutes because the Marauder could survive a wheels up landing.
An airman of the 323rd Bomb Group in the cockpit of a B-26 Marauder nicknamed "Black Fury". Handwritten caption on reverse: 'WT, 323BG. AFM.' The front section of the aircraft is shown with its Plexiglas nose, which was the bombarider's compartment. The Norden Bombsight, a significant technological advancement, which was a closely guarded war secret, would be positioned directly in front of the bombardier. When the aircraft were not on a combat mission, the Norden bombsights were maintained in a separate, locked building with restricted access. The open windows are the roof of the cokpit or flight deck cabin. The crew entered the cabin and bombardier's compartment thgough the nose wheel door.
