Remarks: KIFA 26 May, 1940 during an 'Alarm Start' when his airfield was being attacked by RAF Battles. His AC tail hit trees at the end of the runway, his Bf 110 'clawing' for height. Buried Neubrandenburg (Rosseels). The first German pilot of JGr-102 to score a victory in WWII, a Polish P-23 bomber on 2 September, 1939, his 1st WWII victory. His 2nd, a P-23 8 km NE of Radomsko on 3 September, 1939. His 3rd, a P-37 at Jaroslaw on 13 September, 1939. Nos. 4,5 6 & 7, all P-23's S of Brody on 14 September, 1939. He finished the Polish campaign with 7 victories by 14 September, 1939. His 8th victory, and his first on the Western Front, a Morane 5 km NE of Edenkoben on 8 November, 1939. Remarks: EL awarded 2 September, 1942. 900 missions. 4 Bombers. 148 victories were in the East. His first known Soviet victory, a MiG-1 at Boroditschnoye' on 17 May, 1942. Five LaGG-3's on 30 August, 1942. Among many of his multiple victories, Three Yak-1's and a P-40 on 30 November, 1942. Two Il-2's and a LaGG-5 on 14 January, 1943. Two victories in JG-26. 6 victories were in the Me 262, while serving in JG-7. In JV-44, he flew Me 262A Werk # 111740 'White 6'. In JG-52 in June 1940, he flew a Bf 109 'White 1'. His 1st victory, two Wellingtons 35 km south southwest of Helgoland, 18 December, 1939. Nos 3 & 4, a Blenheim at Den Haag, another at Düsseldorf, 10 May, 1940. EL 9/2/42. Among his last victories, in March, 1945, he downed an Il-2 and two other Russian fighters near the Oder. A B-24 in the Stuttgart area on 8 April, 1945. Most likely his last victory, a B-17 over Munich on 17 April, 1945, the day before his tragic crash and disfigurement. Steinhoff was severly injured and burned 18 April 1945 while taking off in an Me 262. Ended the war in a hospital. Flugbuch (11/44 to 4/45). Deceased 21 February, 1994. Photo
