THE ACE OF POLAND The sole ace of the Polish campaign, Johannes Gentzen, leads an attack by pilots of JGr 102 on a formation of PZL P.37B Los bombers, in a diving attack from astern. In the course of the campaign, his unit would destroy 28 Polish aircraft in the air, and 50 more on the ground. JGr was equipped with Bf 109Ds during the invasion of Poland.

Remarks: EL awarded 2 September, 1942. 900 missions. 4 Bombers. 148 victories were in the East. His first known Soviet victory, a MiG-1 at Boroditschnoye' on 17 May, 1942. Five LaGG-3's on 30 August, 1942. Among many of his multiple victories, Three Yak-1's and a P-40 on 30 November, 1942. Two Il-2's and a LaGG-5 on 14 January, 1943. Two victories in JG-26. 6 victories were in the Me 262, while serving in JG-7. In JV-44, he flew Me 262A Werk # 111740 'White 6'. In JG-52 in June 1940, he flew a Bf 109 'White 1'. His 1st victory, two Wellingtons 35 km south southwest of Helgoland, 18 December, 1939. Nos 3 & 4, a Blenheim at Den Haag, another at Düsseldorf, 10 May, 1940. EL 9/2/42. Among his last victories, in March, 1945, he downed an Il-2 and two other Russian fighters near the Oder. A B-24 in the Stuttgart area on 8 April, 1945. Most likely his last victory, a B-17 over Munich on 17 April, 1945, the day before his tragic crash and disfigurement. Steinhoff was severly injured and burned 18 April 1945 while taking off in an Me 262. Ended the war in a hospital. Flugbuch (11/44 to 4/45). Deceased 21 February, 1994. Photo
