4. Staffel II. Gruppe Jagdgeschwader 26 - 4./JG26

One indicator of this machine has not apparently and therefore it was probably replaced as needed between the seasons as a replacement machine. It could also be that came with the group bar the machine used.

Messerschmitt Bf 109 E-3/N 4./JG26 (White 3+-) WNr 779 force landed France 1940

Photo 01: Fw. Wilhelm 'Willi' Roth Bf109E-3/N 'Weisse 3', WNr.779, of 4./JG 26, POSSIBLE LOCATION Douai 30 km south of Lille. Shot down by a Bloch MB152 on 3 June 1940. POW for a short time. Note the 100 octane triangle - quite rare on a Westfeldzug machine The presence of the high-octane (100) triangle may indicate that 'Weisse 3' was in fact originally a Bf109 E-3 equipped with 20mm MG FF cannon) upgraded to the Bf109 E-4/N standard, albeit with the old style windscreen retained. See Jochen Prien's 'JV der deutschen LW', Part 4/I, Page 311, Photo No. 290 showing 'Weisse 4', W.Nr. 1190, of this same unit 4,/JG 26 which was referred to as a Bf109 E-4/N (with the same old-style windscreen retained) piloted by Uffz. Horst Perez who belly landed it at East Dean in England on 30 September 1940. JG 26 was evidently one of the few Geschwader to receive the E-4/N model (and possibly a complement of DB601N engines for retrofitting the existing Bf109 E-3 aircraft) but it was believed that this was some time in early September 1940 (Galland flew a Bf109 E-4/N for the first time on 7 September 1940).

However it now appears that the Bf109 E-3/N model indeed existed and that it was delivered to II./JG 26 at the time of the Battle of France. It is perhaps little odd for a Gruppe to employ two different types of fuel (i.e. 87 and 100) in a situation where they were obliged to frequently change their air bases in order to continue providing the aerial cover for the rapidly advancing German army.

"On the Generalluftzeugmeister meeting on 19 July 1940 it was noted that up to that date one Gruppe (Wing, each with 3 Staffeln, or Squadrons with 12 planes) of Bf 109 had re-equipped with DB 601N"

Thus it would appear that II./JG 26 had a number of DB 601N equipped Bf109 E-3s, perhaps many more than previously believed, during the attack in the West (Fall Gelb) and the BoF. This was consequently most likely the Gruppe referred to in the July document quoted above. Other units seem to have received these engines during the BoB, often denoted by the C3 or C-3 triangle fuel marking when seen on Bf109 E-4/N instead of the "100" marking with the mentioned Bf109 E-3/N of II./JG 26.

Profile 00: Messerschmitt Bf 109E-3, W.Nr. 1190 of 4./JG26 flown by Uffz. Horst Perez 'White 4' is a Battle of Britain veteran that survives to this day. On Horst Perez was supposed to be part of a bomber escort but either he or the bombers missed the rendezvous and, circling north of Eastbourne, his group of Bf 109s was attacked by Spitfires. Making for the coast, the Bf 109s were again intercepted and the cooling system in Perez aircraft was hit. The aircraft came down at East Dean with the undercarriage retracted and without any severe damage, but as Uffz. Perez climbed from the cockpit he was shot and wounded in the jaw and hand. Once removed from the crash site, the aircraft was sent to Canada for display during 1941 before traveling to the USA, eventually returning to England some years later. It currently resides in the Imperial War Museum collection at Duxford, Cambridgeshire.. When shot down, this aircraft showed signs of recent repainting and detailed examination of surviving sections of original paint prove it was finished in non-standard locally mixed greys on the upper surfaces and not the 74/75 as described in previously published accounts. In similar fashion, the fin, lower fuselage and undersides carried several coats of paint in widely differing shades of 65 and pale blue.

There is a '100' written inside the octane triangle that means it was an E-3/N not a simple E-3. This is not surprising since JG 26 - because of Galland - was the first unit to receive the new engines ... TAKE CARE that WNr.1932 was still a simple E-3 when pictured at Bönninghardt!

Messerschmitt Bf 109 E-3/N 6./JG26 brown 9 and bar force landed France June 1940

Photo 01: Messerschmitt Bf 109 E-3/N 6./JG26 brown 9 and bar was shot down during the Battle of France by Armee de I'Air Caudron C.710 flown by the all-Polish squadron known as the 'Warsaw Group' GC 1/145 June 1940.

Caudron CR 714  Armee de I'Air GC 1/145 Warsaw Group

It is believed that about 40 C.714s were delivered to the French air force, which, after some 90 had been built, cancelled production because of dissatisfaction with the type's rate of climb. They were used to equip an all-Polish squadron which became known as the 'Warsaw Group' (GC 1/145), this unit seeing action against the Germans between 2-13 June 1940. Following the collapse of France, a small number were used by the Vichy French air force, and about 20 were confiscated by the Germans for use by the Luftwaffe.

Known Aircraft: Bf 109E-3 WNr 1190 'White 4+-' (lost 9/30/40)

Remarks: POW after his AC experienced engine failure during aerial combat with a Spitfire believed to be of RAF No. 92 Sq., piloted by Sgt D.E. Kingaby. He crashed at Eastdean, west of Eastbourne, Sussex, and was severely wounded in the hand and jaw by his captors as he crawled from the AC.

Place where shot down, Eastdean W of Eastbourne Sussex

Type. Me 109 E3. 4+(Black with white rim) Shield:-Shield Tiger's head the insignias for Schlageter "S"

Flight emanated from between Boulogne and Etaples at about 1600 Hrs on bomber escort.

They were supposed to be escorting bombers, but never located them and circled round to the North of Eastbourne. They were intercepted at 28,000 Ft and made for the coast. They were intercepted again and in the ensuing dog-fight the engine of his A/C failed. Apparently there were no shots in the A/C itself. The pilot made a forced landing with undercarriage retracted and the aircraft is in good condition.

On getting out of his aircraft, this pilot was shot at and wounded in the hand and jaw. This pilot enquired after a number of his friends who had recently been lost. Only one was known to belong to 4/JG 26, two others were from 1/LG.2.The pilot had only recently come to France and been making one sortie a day weather permitting. He had previously been in Vienna.

Morale:- Fair, Not sure of himself, probably due to circumstances of his wounding.

Unteroffizier Horst Perez age 22. Identity disc 60018.

This report was prepared and signed by B Jepsom for Squadron Leader S.D.Felkin. 1/10/40. The Werke Nr 1190 was entered by hand in fine print.
