Profile 00: Messerschmitt Bf 109E-1 of 7./JG26 flown by Uffz. Karl-Heinz Bock 'White 2', the Bf 109E-1 of Uffz. Karl-Heinz Bock of JG26 which was forced to make a wheels-up landing near Rye after experiencing engine trouble during a freie Jagd over the London area on the afternoon of 17 September. Finished in a high demarcation 02/71 scheme, unusually for an aircraft of the III. Gruppe, the sides of the fuselage and fin carried a light mottling of what is believed to have been 02. The spinner, cowling and rudder were painted yellow and the G26 'Schlageter' shield was carried beneath the windscreen on both sides of the fuselage. Like many E-1s of the summer battles, the aircraft had been fitted with the later style of canopy.

Photo 03: This photograph of Uffz. Karl-Heinz Bock's Bf 109E-1 serves to illustrate the similar appearance of Oblt Muncheberg's aircraft, and for which no suitable photograph exists. Uffz. Bock, flying an aircraft very similar in appearance to Muncheberg's, forced landed this aircraft at Broomhill Farm, near Rye, on the afternoon of 17 September. He was on a freelance fighter sweep to London, suffered engine failure, forced landed and was captured unhurt.

Gruppe practice, the fuselage Balkenkreuz, aircraft number and Gruppe bar are of smaller proportions than usual. While most of the rudder is yellow, a segment has been left in the original Blue 65 to record the pilot's Abschuss tally.

Where did you get the info on this pilot.
I have a Walter Blume which had claims up to August 16, 1940 then later in 1944 so I suspect this is another Walter Blume or it took him a while to come back to active service.

It could well be the same man, according to Luftwaffe Im Focus Walter Blume was shot down over England in August 1940 and taken prisoner but was released in a prisoner exchange in 1943 and then resumed operational flying. (I've never heard of anything like that before but obviously it happened.)

As the third Gruppe of JG26 retained the high demarcation Blue 65 finish throughout 1940, the fuselage Balkenkreuz and numerals were reapplied in smaller format to help conceal the aircraft at high altitude.

Photo 01: On 28 September, the use of small formations of Ju88s escorted by large numbers of fighters was successful in bringing the RAF to battle and seventeen British fighters were shot down for the loss of only three German fighters and one pilot. One of the successful pilots on this date was Oblt. Gustav 'Micky' Sprick, the Staffelkapitan of 8./JG26 who had been with the Staffel since 23 September 1939. In this photograph, Sprick has just landed after claiming his 20th victory, a Hurricane of 501Sqn. over Canterbury.

Photo 01: Oblt. Gustav Sprick, Staffelkapitan of 8./JG26 since 8 August 1940, was awarded the RK on 1 October 1940 when he had 20 victories, By 27 November, his score had risen to 23. Sprick grew up on a farm, joined the Luftwaffe in 1939 and was particularly popular with his Staffel comrades on account of his modesty. Unlike many other successful pilots, he was very reserved about his successes and preferred not to draw attention to himself.

Photo 01: Oblt. Gustav Sprick, Staffelkapitan of 8./JG26, was killed on 28 June 1941 'when his aircraft lost a wing during an air battle. He had 31 victories. A subsequent investigation revealed a weakness in the structure of the wing.

Profile 00-00A: Messerschmitt Bf 109E-4 flown by Gerhard Schopfel, of III./JG26. The Messerschmitt Bf 109E-4 flown by Oblt. Gerhard Schopfel of III./JG26, circa 18 August. Finished in a high demarcation 02/71 finish, the top segment of the rudder and tips of the wings and tail planes are painted yellow. A yellow pennant is attached to the antenna mast and beneath the cockpit is the red Hollenhund emblem of 9./JG26 and ahead of it, the JG2 'Schlageter' shield. It was while flying this aircraft during the early afternoon of 18 August that Schopfel shot down four Hurricanes of 501Sqn near Canterbury.

Branches have been placed along the wing leading edges to help camouflage the aircraft, although no effort has been made to cover the conspicuous yellow paint applied to the tips of the wings and tailplanes. This view also shows that the upper wing cross has been applied further inboard than usual.

The 'Hellhound' emblem, just visible beneath the cockpit, was black edged in red. Oblt. Ebeling himself collided with his wingman during a mission to England on 5 November and was taken prisoner. It was Ebeling's 96th war flight and, on the same day, he was awarded the Ritterkreuz.

Photo 01: Heinz Ebeling was born on 2 January 1918 at Karlsruhe. Ebeling was posted to JG26 on 1 December 1939. Leutnant Ebeling was assigned to 8./JG26. He achieved his first victory, a French Morane 406 over Gramont, on 17 May 1940. By the end of the French campaign, he had recorded five victories. During the large aerial combats of the Battle of Britain, Ebeling shot down 10 British fighters in August 1940 alone, including three victories on 12 August and two on 15 August. Oberleutnant Ebeling was appointed Staffelkapitän of 9./JG26 on 22 August 1940. On 31 August, Ebeling shot down a RAF Hurricane north of London. However, his Bf 109E-4 (WNr 3712) 'Yellow 3' received hits in the radiator during the encounter. Ebeling managed to nurse the damaged aircraft as far as the Channel where he was forced to bale out. After one and one half hours in the sea, he was rescued by a German air-sea rescue seaplane. Later that same day, Ebeling shot down a further two RAF Hurricanes. After claiming three further victories in September 1940, Ebeling led 9./JG26 through a conversion to the fighter bomber role. From 15 October, he was to lead the Staffel on many fighterbomber missions over England. On 5 November 1940 Ebeling, flying Me 109E-4/B (W.Nr. 3740) 'Yellow 3', collided with his wingman Fw. Walter Braun over Dungeness. Both survived their crashlandings to be taken prisoners for the remainder of the war. Ebeling was awarded the Ritterkreuz on this day for 18 victories. Ebeling died on 30 November 1987 at Obsteig in Tirol.

Profile 00: Messerschmitt Bf 109E.3 of 9./JG26 flown by Oblt. Wilhelm Fronhofer. 'Yellow 10' the Bf 109E-3 of Oblt. Wilhelm Fronhofer of 9./JG26 which forced landed at Ulcombe during the early evening of 31 August. With an upper scheme of 70/71 it was finished in the commonly seen III./JG26 high demarcation camouflage style with no discernible mottling on the sides of the fuselage, fin or rudder. In keeping with the other aircraft of this Gruppe, the Balkenkreuz, Gruppe bar and aircraft number were smaller than usually seen. The 9.Staffel Hollenhund emblem and JG26 'Schlageter' shield were carried on both sides of the fuselage beneath the cockpit. It is understood that the tip of the spinner was a lighter green than the remainder. The Werk Nummer on the fin is applied on a dark green rectangular background indicating that this aircraft was originally finished in a low-demarcation 70/71 camouflage scheme.

Messerschmitt Bf 109E 9./JG 26 (Y10+I) Willi Fronhofer crash landed Ulcombe 01

Photo 01: On 31 August, JG26 mounted various missions throughout the day and claimed 22 victories for the loss of five aircraft and pilots, the heaviest loss of pilots in a single day during the whole of the Battle of Britain. During a late afternoon mission the entire Geschwader took off to rendezvous with KG 76, which was to attack the RAF aerodrome at Hornchurch. As soon as the aircraft of III./JG26 crossed the coast, they were attacked by RAF fighters and the aircraft of Oblt. Wilhelm Fronhofer of Stab III./JG26 was one of three pilots shot down. His aircraft, 'Yellow 10' forced landed at Jubilee Hall Farm, Ulcombe, where Fronhofer was taken prisoner.

Profile 00: Messerschmitt Bf 109E.1 flown by Fw. Artur Beese of 9./JG26 'Yellow 11', the Bf 109E-l flown by Fw. Artur Beese of 9./JG26 which force-landed and broke its back in the sand dunes near Calais on 24 August. Finished in a high demarcation 02/71 camouflage scheme, it carried both the 'Schlageter' and red 'Hollenhund' emblems beneath the cockpit. The fuel triangle on this aircraft was white with a yellow border and, in keeping with III./ JG26 practice, the aircraft number, Balkenkreuz and III. Gruppe bar were applied in a smaller size than usual.

Photo 02: is the red outline and number of the 87 octane triangle. One possible explanation for this unusual variation is that towards the end of August, JG26 had begun to receive some Bf 109E-4/N aircraft powered with the DB601N engine which required 96 octane C-3 fuel. Perhaps the non-standard colors were intended to help avoid refueling errors.

This specific scheme is an example of the unusually high and relatively sharp demarcation of the top fuselage colors. The octane marker by the filler cap is unusual in being a red-bordered yellow triangle.

Luftwaffe pilot Artur Beese

Artur Beese was born on 11 March 1916 at Hörselgau. Beese joined JG26 in October or November 1939. Unteroffizier Beese was assigned to the Stabstaffel of III./JG26. He was shot down in aerial combat with French Morane 406 fighters near Lille in France and taken prisoner on 1 June 1940. He was released when France fell. Beese participated in the Battle of Britain. On 24 August 1940, Feldwebel Beese, shot down into the Channel by RAF fighters, was rescued unharmed by the German rescue service. Leutnant Beese claimed his first victory, a RAF Spitfire fighter, shot down on 24 July 1941. At the end of January 1943, I./JG26 was transferred to Russia in an exchange with III./JG54, who replaced them on the Channel Front. By the time the Gruppe was returned to the Channel front in June, Oberleutnant Beese had 13 victories to his credit. On 20 June 1943, Beese was appointed Staffelkapitän of 1./JG26. He recorded his first victories over the increasing number of Allied four-engine bombers raiding German occupied territory on 17 August 1943, when he shot down two USAAF B-17s for his 16th and 17th victories. On 8 September, shot down by RAF Spitfire fighters, he baled out of his Fw 190 A-5 (W.Nr. 550 474) 'White 2' west of Cambrai. He suffered only minor injuries. Oberleutnant Beese was shot down in aerial combat with USAAF P-47 fighters near Melun in France on 6 February 1944.

He attempted to bale out of his Fw 190 A-6 (W.Nr. 531 060) 'White 7' but hit the tail and was killed. He was posthumously awarded the Deutsches Kreuz in Gold on 29 March 1944. Remarks: Scored the first victory for JG-26 in 'Red 5' on 28 September, 1939, a French Curtiss Hawk-75A fighter near Tünsdorf/Mettlach while on an escort mission for an Hs 126 on a spotting mission. On this same date, he became the first JG-26 casualty, suffering two bullet wounds, requiring 8 months to recuperate. His 1st, a Hawk 75 on 9/28/39 at Tünsdorf/Mettlach. His 2nd, a Morane 406 at Mantes on 9 June, 1940. His 3rd, a Spitfire at Dover on 25 July, 1940. His 4th a Spitfire at Dover on 14 August, 1940. His 5th & 6th both Spitfires E of Dover on 15 August, 1940. Nos.7 & 8, both Hurricane NNW of Dover on 18 August, 1940. His 9th a Hurricane at Littlestone on 25 August, 1940. His 10th a Spitfire at Croydon on 1 September, 1940. Shot down with wounds 11 August, 1940 in his 'White 7' by a Spitfire, making an emergency landing in the Calais/Caffiers area. POW 1 September, 1940, after downing his 10th shot down by the German Bf 110 fighter he had just rescued from his 10th victiim! He crashed his 'White 11' AC at Newbridge, Iden, near Rye, south of Folkestone, England, suffering head and back injuries. Spent the remainder of the war in a Canadian POW Camp. Released in 1946. Deceased 1 July, 1999.

September, 1940. His 5th & 6th, both Hurricanes of RAF No. 303 Sq. at Guildford on 30 September, 1940. On page 63 in the 'JG-26, Top Guns of the Luftwaffe' book by Caldwell, Horten states that he shot down seven aircraft by September, 1940, before being grounded as were all the Technical Officers. Believed known for his work on the Horten Flying Wing. Retired Bundeswehr Obstlt. Deceased 9 December, 1998. Alternate spelling: Horton.

Remarks: POW ; Forced to bail out over London after colliding with his wingman, Fw Walter Braun. Both men were captured near Dungeness, England. On 31 August, 1940, after downing a Hurricane N of London, he crashed into the Channel in Wk# 3712, but was sucessfully rescued by a Do 18 after a 90 minute swim. Later this same day, he downed two more Hurricanes. 163 missions. His first victory, a Morane 406 at Gramont, Kreis Namur, 17 May, 1940. His 2nd, a Hurricane northwest of Ostende, 28 May, 1940. He was uninjured. One known victory, his 1st, a Mureaux at Löwen on 15 May, 1940. His 2nd, a Spitfire I west of Dunkirk, 29 May, 1940. I was appointed Staffelkapitan of 9./JG26 on 23 September 1939. We spent a quiet autumn of 1939 and winter of 1939-40, our Gruppe's only Abschuss being claimed on 7 November by my friend Joachim Muncheberg from the Gruppenstab III./JG26.

During the campaign against the West, I chalked up four victories. In fact, my first aerial combat impressed itself on me more than my first actual victory. I remember I encountered a Belgian Hurricane in the Beauvechain area. We came face to face and shot at each other simultaneously. What is apparent in such an encounter is that you do not know in which direction your opponent will go and, of course, if you each have the same intention, you could collide. I do not know if I hit him but, in any case, he got me several times in the wings. Fortunately, nothing vital in my aircraft was destroyed.

So, the western campaign ended for me without too much damage and we prepared for the next step. If you ask the question, did we feel fear before action? - I would like to tell you the following short story. When I was young, I was a 'pathfinder'. With my gang, we often went to play in ruins. I suffered from vertigo and remained on the ground when my comrades were playing high on the walls. Was it to defeat this fear that I chose to join the Luftwaffe? Probably! When I received orders to enlist, I was very anxious and I really wondered if I had chosen the right arm of service. But when I was in action and too busy to worry, all my fear disappeared.

I had the same feeling during my entire career as a fighter pilot. Between the end of the campaign in France and the forthcoming Battle of Britain, I was anxious to know how things would go; but tension of the Sitzbereitschaft disappeared as soon the start order was given. Action eliminated all fear.

One of my first victories of the Battle of Britain is a good example of this 'fear-non fear' factor. I had a dog-fight with a British Spitfire at very high altitude. I succeeded in firing at him. The pilot lost control of his aircraft which continued to fly horizontally before diving in spirals and crashing. We were already in France. I over flew the crash site and when I decided to flyaway and return to my base, my engine suddenly became trouble some and I had to land immediately. Fortunately, I found a large field and belly-landed without problem. In the proximity, there was a GermanLuftwaffehospital. A doctor arrived quickly at my landing site and took my heart beat. When he had finished, he looked at me in astonishment and said:'You just had a dogfight, you've made a belly-landing yet your heart beats as if you were sitting in a chair reading a book-amazing!'

Gerhard 'Gerd' Schöpfel was born on 19 December 1912 at ERGurt in Thüringen. He was originally a member of the police force but transferred to the Luftwaffe in 1936. Following completion of his flying training, Schöpfel was assigned to I./JG233 which became I./JG135 and, finally, I./JG51. Leutnant Schöpfel was posted to join I./JG26 in 1939. Oberleutnant Schöpfel took command of 9./JG26 on its formation on 23 September 1939. He gained his first victory during the Battle of France, a RAF Hurricane near Courtrai, on 19 May 1940. He added to his score over the beaches of Dunkirk during the evacuation of the British army. He was very successful during the Battle of Britain. On 18 August 1940 he shot down four Hurricanes in one sortie over Canterbury, England. Two of his victims in this engagement were notable RAF fighter pilots Donald McKay (20 confirmed and 4 damaged victories), who baled out wounded, and Kenneth Lee (7 confirmed and 1 damaged victories), who also baled out wounded, both of 501Sqn RAF. Hauptmann Schöpfel became Gruppenkommandeur of III./JG26 when Göring promoted Adolf Galland (104 victories, RK-Br) to Kommodore of JG26 on 22 August 1940. On 11 September 1940 he was awarded the Ritterkreuz on achieving 20 victories.

On 1 December 1941 he was promoted to Major and on 6 December 1941 became Kommodore of JG26 when Adolf Galland was promoted General der Jagdfieger. Over Dieppe on 19 August 1942 he shot down two Spitfires for his 41st and 42nd victories. Schöpfel left JG26 on 10 January 1943 to take up the role of Ia (Operations Officer) at Jafü Brittany. He was to serve as Fighter Operations officer southern Italy from July and Fighter Leader Norway from November. On 1 May 1944, he joined III./JG54 before being appointed Kommodore of JG4 on 1 June 1944. On 6 August, he was shot down in combat near Schwerin flying Bf 109 G-6 (WNr 440728). He baled out wounded.

Following recovery from his wounds in November 1944, Schöpfel was appointed Fighter Leader Hungary. In February 1945 he commanded the Luftkreigsschule at Gatow. On 10 April he was appointed Kommodore of JG6 based in northern Czechoslovakia. He became a prisoner of the Russians and languished in Soviet prisons for four and a half years finally returning to Germany in December 1949. After his release from imprisonment in the Soviet Union, Schöpfel worked as a chauffeur. He later became a merchant and in the early 1960s returned to the aviation field as an executive of Air Lloyd in Bonn.

'Gerd' Schöpfel flew 700 missions and gained 45 victories including three four-engined bombers. All his victories were scored over the Western Front.

Luftwaffe pilot Gustav 'Micky' Sprick

Gustav 'Micky' Sprick was born on 29 November 1917 at Biemsen in the Lemgo region of Westfalen. Sprick was posted to JG26 on 23 September 1939. Fähnrich Sprick was assigned to 8./JG26. Leutnant Sprick shot down his first enemy aircraft on 10 May 1940, a Dutch Fokker T-5 twin-engined bomber over Breda. Sprick was very successful during the French campaign having accrued nine victories by the fall of France. However, on 14 June he was shot down, near Evreux, by RAF Hurricane fighters after claiming one of their number. He force-landed but survived the incident uninjured being rescues by German troops.

On 8 August 1940, Oberleutnant Sprick was appointed Staffelkapitän of 8./JG26. He gained 11 victories in the Battle of Britain. He was awarded the Ritterkreuz on 1 October after gaining his 20th victory on 28 September. By the end of 1940 he had recorded 24 victories. He achieved his 30th victory on 22 June 1941. III./JG26 took-off on 28 June 1941, to intercept British Circus No. 26 targetting the Comines power station. 8./JG26 was attacked from above and broke up into individual combats with RAF Spitfire fighters. Sprick peRGormed a split-S manoeuvre whereby the right wing of his Bf 109 F-2 (W.Nr. 5743) promptly collapsed and he plunged to his death near Holque. 'Micky' Sprick was credited with 31 victories in 192 missions. All his victories were recorded over the Western front.
