Profile 00: Messerschmitt Bf 109E.7 Trop White 1 flown by Oblt. Wolfgang Redlich, Staffelkapitan of 1./JG27, mid. June 1941 This aircraft retained its European camouflage for some time after being flown to Africa and appears to have been finished in a particularly densely mottled uppersuface scheme of 02 and 71 with a splinter pattern in these colours over the wing and tail uppersurfaces. In addition, the aircraft has a yellow engine cowling and rudder and a white fuselage band, all of which must have rendered this machine particularly conspicuous in desert conditions. Twenty white Abschussbalken appear on the rudder.

Photo's 02-03: When Oblt Redlich arrived in North Africa, he already had 10 victories and claimed his first two in the new theatre on 19 April when he shot down two Hurricanes near Tobruk. Redlich claimed a total of 26 victories in North Africa, bringing his total to 36, after which he was transferred to a staff position in Germany.

Aircraft arriving later in North Africa were camouflaged on their uppersurfaces only in an overall sand color and lacked the green mottles. This applied to some Bf 109Es and certainly all Bf 109Fs operating in North Africa.

The engine cowling is yellow and the spinner is red with a white segment.

Pilots who returned to Germany to collect new aircraft have remarked that the only external difference between their standard Bf 109s and those intended for North Africa was that the latter were fitted with a dust filter and it is assumed from this that such aircraft still retained their European schemes. Presumably, therefore, the new Sand 79 paint scheme was applied in transit, probably in Sicily.

Gunther Steinhausen of 1./JG27, early August 1941 It is believed that this aircraft was finished in the new RLM colours specially developed for the North African campaign. The original Green 71 canopy was masked off when the machine was repainted, probably at a base facility in Italy or Sicily, with 78 undersurfaces and low-demarcation 79 uppersurfaces, over which Olive Green 80 mottles have been applied. Note that on this aircraft the unit badge is positioned further forward than usual and that the fuselage Balkenkreuz resembles the style normally reserved for the wing uppersurfaces.

Photo 01: The Bf 109E-7Trop White 10, flown by Fw. Gunther Steinhausen of I./JG27, seen here in flight in early August 1941. Fw. Steinhausen was one of the more successful pilots flying with 1. Staffe1 and claimed his first victory, a Hurricane north ofTobruk, on 9 June 1941. He claimed his second, a Buffalo, near Buq Buq on 18 June. Curiously, although Steinhausen was then credited with two Hurricanes north-west of Mersa Matruh on 2 August, bringing his tally to four, the yellow rudder of his machine is marked only with three white victory bars. Steinhausen later increased his tally to 40 but was posted missing on 6 September 1942. By that time he had received the German Cross in Gold and the Knights Cross. He was promoted to Leutnant posthumously.

Profile 00: Messerschmitt Bf 109E.7 Trop White 12 of 1./JG27, Sicily, May 1941 It is believed that this aircraft was re-camouflaged in Sicily and that for early desert schemes such as this, which first appeared as early as May 1941, stocks of Italian paints were used. Note the weathered, dirty white outline to the fuselage cross compared to the new white of the fuselage band and code number, indicating that the aircraft had seen some service before the desert camouflage and band were applied.

Photo 01: Shown on Sicily in May 1941, this Bf 109E-7Trop, White 12 of I./JG27, was photographed before transferring to North Africa and shows the desert paint scheme which is believed to have been applied using Italian colours. This aircraft has been fitted with a Lw-Zielfluganiage Peil G IV direction-finder, as is evident from the fairing below the fuselage. Full details concerning the significance of the white walls to the tyres are still lacking but are believed to show that the tailwheel had special properties to aid the discharge of static electricity, while the white-walled main-wheel tyres were specially strengthened for use where airfields consisted of hard, rough ground.

Photo 01: When British troops first found this Bf 109E-7, White 12 of I./JG27, in late 1941, its engine had already been removed but the rest of the airframe was relatively intact and was still standing on its wheels. The remains were then set alight and photographed for propaganda purposes. Eventually, the undercarriage collapsed and the wreck burned out.

Photo 01: This Bf 109E-7Trop coded Black 1 would normally have been allocated to the Staffelkapitan of 2./JG27. When this Staffel arrived in North Africa in December 1941, it was under the command of Hptm. Erich Gerlitz who retained command only until 25 December when he left to take over II. Gruppe. He was replaced by Oblt. Fritz Keller who then led the Staffel from 24 January to 18 March 1942.

Profile 00: Messerschmitt Bf 109E.7 Trop of 2./JG27, Libya, 1941 In addition to its unusual mottled scheme of 79 and 80 over Blue 80 undersurfaces, Black 2 also has a non-standard variation of the fuselage Balkenkreuz which, with its wider than standard white segments, more closely resembles the style normally reserved for wing undersurfaces. Note that the auxiliary fuel tanks carried by Luftwaffe single-seat and heavy fighters at this time had no stencilling, the later, familiar warning Keine Bombe! only appearing to reassure the public that the object was Not a Bomb when, as a result of fighter operations over the Reich, jettisoned auxiliary tanks were often found by civilians.

Photo 01: The mottled desert camouflage showed considerable variations, perhaps indicating the work of different hands, but while most examples had rather large, regular mottles, those on this Black 2 of 2./JG27 are smaller and more irregular.

The aircraft has retained its European colour scheme of 02 and 71 on the uppersurfaces and Blue 65 undersurfaces, but, as the marked contrast between the tone of the black Balkenkreuz and the Green 71 on the wing shows, the 71, normally a very dark colour, has bleached to a medium green.

Profile 00: Messerschmitt Bf 109E-7 Trop of 2./JG27, Libya, mid 1941. Relatively few Bf 109Es operating in North Africa were repainted in a full desert scheme and it is believed that on most that were, Italian camouflage colours were used, as on this machine. Note that the canopy was removed from the airframe during repainting, meticulously masked off, sprayed sand colour, and replaced after the main painting of the fuselage had been completed. Although a number of aircraft from this Staffel had their black numbers outlined in red, it was omitted from this particular example.

Obtaining sufficient quantities of fuel was a constant problem for the German forces in North Africa as many ships transporting fuel and other supplies were sunk by submarines and aircraft operating from Malta. Although obsolete, Royal Navy Albacore and Swordfish torpedo-carrying aircraft operating at night from land bases on the island were remarkably effective. The British obtained details of sailing dates, etc, from ULTRA.

Photo 02: Seldom remarked upon is the fact that the right-hinged canopy of the ,Messerschmitt Bf 109 was almost unique and is found elsewhere only on a few later Italian fighters. Quite possibly this Black 10 is the same aircraft as shown above. The items of equipment, including signal cartridges, life jacket and sun helmet, stored behind the pilots head and back armour, suggest a transfer flight.

Profile 00: Messerschmitt Bf 109E.7 Trop Yellow l of 3./JG27, 1941 The Yellow l was another aircraft which flew in North Africa still camouflaged in European colours, in this instance, probably in an 02/71 splinter scheme on the fuselage top decking and wing uppersurfaces. The fuselage sides were heavily mottled in these same two colours and all undersurfaces were Blue 65.

Photo 01: The most popular kind of mission among the German fighter pilots in North Africa was the freie Jagd where the more aggressive or more skilled pilots would soon be noticed and perhaps be appointed Rotten or Schwarm leader. Once in that position and with a wingman to watch their backs, such pilots had the opportunity to build up their personal scores. This photograph shows Bf 109Es on a freie Jagd mission with Yellow 1 of 3./JG27 closest to the camera. From 1 February until 1 June 1941, and then again from August 1941 to 10 June 1942, this Staffel was led by Oblt. Gerhard Homuth and it is possible that this may have been his aircraft. After 10 June 1942, Homuth became Kommandeur of 1. Gruppe, which he then led until November 1942.

Profile 00: Messerschmitt Bf 109E.7 Trop of 3./JG27, late Summer of 1941 Although this machine had seen service in North Africa for some months, the heavy exhaust deposit on the fuselage side indicates it had accumulated a considerable number of flying hours. Nevertheless, its paint finish is still in remarkably good condition and indicates that the repainting of aircraft in Luftwaffe tropical colours was carried out to a high standard. Apart from the fuselage number and the segment on the spinner, this machine lacked any of the usual yellow recognition markings. It is believed that the main camouflage colours were Italian with the green mottles being in a particularly dark tone similar to the later RLM 80.

Messerschmitt Bf 109E JG27.3 (Y4+) Libya 1941 01-03

Photo's 01-03: Bf 109E-7 Trop, Yellow 4 of 3,/JG27 in the late Summer of 1941. Later, following the Allied advance into Cyrenaica which began on 9 December 1941, the remains of this aircraft, without wings or engine, were discovered on an abandoned airfield by British troops.

Ludwig 'Zirkus' Franzisket

Ludwig 'Zirkus' Franzisket was born on 26 June 1917 at Düsseldorf. Fähnrich Franzisket was serving with JG26 in 1938. On 1 August 1939, he transferred to 1./JG1. He participated in the invasion of Poland and the Low Countries and France. On 11 May 1940, Franzisket claimed his first two victories. He ended the French campaign with nine victories to his credit, including two French LeO 451 twin-engine bombers shot down near Nesle on one mission and a French Morane fighter shot down near Roye on a later mission to record his 7th through 9th victories on 5 June. On 9 July, 1./JG1 was redesignated 7./JG27. On 1 October 1940, Franzisket was transferred as Adjutant of I./JG27. In spring 1941, I./JG27 was relocated to North Africa. Franzisket had 14 victories to his credit at this time. On 14 June, Franzisket intercepted a lone RAF Maryland twin-engine bomber escorted by a Hurricane fighter. He shot down both aircraft. The Hurricane was piloted by South African ace, Captain Ken Driver (10 destroyed and 1 damaged victories) of 1Sqn, SAAF, who baled out to become a prisoner of war. Oberleutnant Franzisket was awarded the Ritterkreuz on 23 July for 22 victories in 204 missions. Franzisket was appointed Staffelkapitän of 1./JG27 on 6 December 1941. On 25 December, Franzisket was wounded when his Bf 109 F-4trop was damaged by flak 40km south of Agedabia. On 11 April 1942 he shot down a P-40 to raise his victory total to 30. On 29 October 1942, Franzisket was shot down in aerial combat with RAF Spitfire fighters. He baled out of his stricken Bf 109 G-2trop (W.Nr. 10616) but struck the tailplane breaking a leg. When I./JG27 was withdrawn from North Africa at the end of 1942, Franzisket had 39 victories to his credit. From 1 July 1943, Franzisket led 1./Ergänzungs-Jagdgruppe Süd. He attended a fighter leader's course from 15 July before being appointed Gruppenkommandeur of I./JG27 based in Germany peRGorming Reichsverteidigung duties. On 14 October, he claimed two USAAF B-17 four-engine bombers from the formations raiding Schweinfurt. On 12 May 1944, in aerial combat with four-engine bombers over Bad Orb, Franzisket's Bf 109 G-6/U4 (W.Nr. 441097) was hit by return fire and he was badly wounded. He successfully baled out of his stricken aircraft despite his wounds.

Following his recovery, Franzisket led the fighter leaders' courses at Königsberg in Neumark from 1 October 1944. He was able to shoot down two USAAF B-17 four-engine bombers on 6 October. On 15 December 1944, Franzisket joined the Geschwaderstab of JG27. He was appointed Kommodore of JG27 on 30 December 1944. Franzisket died on 23 November 1988 at Münster. 'Zirkus' Franzisket was credited with 43 victories in over 500 missions. He recorded all his victories over the Western front. Included in his victory total are four four-engined bombers.

His 2nd, a Spitfire SW of Diederhofen on 7 April, 1940. His 3rd, a Curtis SE of Metz 10 May, 1940. His 4th a Wellington at Sedan on 14 may, 1940. On 23 November, 1941, during a morning combat with Hurricanes of RAF Nos. 229 & 238, he claimed one victory. Later that same day, he was shot down in Wk# 8469 by a P-40, thought to be piloted by broke both legs bailing out, and was taken prisoner. He died of an embolism in an English hospital on 3 December, 1941, after his legs were amputated.

Luftwaffe and, following fighter pilot training, was posted to I./JG134 'Horst Wessel'. On 15 March 1937, Oberleutnant Lippert was transferred, as a founding member, to I./JG53 based at Wiesbaden-Erbenheim. Lippert gained his first aerial victories during the Spanish Civil War flying with the Condor Legion. Leutnant Lippert was assigned to 3. Staffel of J 88. He amassed five victories in this conflict between the middle of 1938 and March 1939, receiving the award of the Spanienkreuz in Gold mit Schwerten. Following his return to Germany, Lippert was appointed Staffelkapitän of 3./JG53 on 1 May 1939. He led the unit during the French campaign. He claimed his first victory of World War 2 on 30 September 1939, when he shot down a French Morane fighter in the Wissembourg area. Hauptmann Lippert was appointed Gruppenkommandeur of II./JG27 on 4 September 1940. He gained five victories with the unit over England during the Battle of Britain, all RAF fighters. He was awarded the Ritterkreuz on 24 September after 13 victories gained in World War 2. Lippert was to lead II./JG27 in the invasion of Russia, after a brief sojourn in the Balkans. Lippert had compiled 25 victories, including his Spanish Civil War victories, by the time the Gruppe was relocated to North Africa at the end of September 1941. He claimed two RAF P-40 fighters and a Wellington twin-engine bomber shot down on 22 November to record his 27th through 29th victories. On 23 November 1941, after shooting down a RAF Hurricane fighter, Lippert's Bf 109F-4 (W.Nr. 8469) was hit in the engine while engaged with Curtiss P-40s and Blenheim bombers. In baling out of his stricken aircraft, he broke both his legs when he struck the vertical stabiliser. He landed behind British lines, was captured and taken to a hospital in Egypt.

Both legs became infected and required amputation. He died from an embolism after the operation without regaining consciousness. Some sources indicate that Lippert was shot down by the Wolfgang Lippert was credited with 30 victories. His score included five victories gained during the Spanish Civil War and four victories claimed over the Eastern front.

'Every- Gescl1wader has its own personality'

EDUARD NEUMANN, JG27

During the campaign in the West, I was Gescbwaderadjutant to Oberst Max Ibel. He had already fought as a pioneer during the First World War, but at that time our Stab was distinguished by Hptm. Adolf Galland who showed great abilities as a promising fighter pilot. In July 1940, I became Kommandeur of I./JG27 and claimed my first victory, a Spitfire, on 8 August. At the end of the Battle of Britain, I had six Abscbusse and one of my best pilots was Obit. Gerhard Homuth Kapitan of 3. Staffel.

We were assigned to North Africa even before the end of the Balkan campaign. We flew to Sicily and then on to. Africa where we landed at Gazala, between Derna and Tobruk. Part of the first Staffel was already there. When we arrived, our opponents were Hurricanes which had had it easy with the unescorted Stukas. We had significant advantages over the Hurricanes. Homuth Marseille, Schroer, and Stahlschmidt were very good pilots. Marseille in particular was magnificent, looked after by the gods, though he was a little rascal and an impertinent lad. Consequently, when other Gescbwader had to release some pilots to our unit, he was assigned to our unit at Doberitz even though he was a very good pilot and already had several Abscbusse. When he arrived, his hair was too long, and his jacket was shabby. His father was a general in the Army, but at that time Marseille was not yet a Leutnant. It was said that he kept the company of film actresses and he was not considered suitable to be an officer. His Staffelkapitan was Homuth who was serious and intellectual, the opposite of Marseille, and Homuth did not like him. I kept a tight rein on Marseille and he trusted me. Every Gescbwader has its own personality. We had our own intentions and we protected our own. In Africa, Kesselring wanted us to attack the airfields at Alamein with the Stukas, but I told him that this would result only in our annihilation. One had to protest vehemently to achieve the objective and in JG27 there was a dedicated loyalty which is the reason members of the Gescbwader continue to this day to come to the reunions. I became Kommodore of JG27 on 10 June 1942. Homuth took my place as Kommandeur of 1. Gruppe and Marseille took over Homuth's Staffel. From Africa I went to Athens in Greece for the air defence of the Aegean. One Gruppe was at Athens, one on Crete, and another in France. In March 1943 I returned to Berlin and Radel took command of the Gescbwader. When I left, my tally was relatively poor compared to those of the aces which our unit had generated, but I considered that I had carried out my duties the best way I could.

In 1928 Eduard went to Berlin to study mechanical and aviation engineering. It was here that he discovered his enthusiasm for flight and quickly became a member of the 'Akakflieg' Glider club in 1929. In 1932 he passed his flying examinations in powered flight in Cottbus. In 1934 he began training on the Fieseler Fi-5 aircraft, then later the same year he joined the fledgling Luftwaffe, which was still under secret construction. In Schleissheim he received final combat training, Neumann was then deployed to II./JG132 'Richthofen' in July 1935.

After the re-training on the Bf 109D at Barth in August 1937 he was transferred to the Luftwaffe's 'Condor Legion' which was to be sent to aid General Franco's Fascists in the Spanish Civil War along with other notable personalities like Adolf Galland and Werner Mölders. After a year's service Neumann returned to Germany at the rank of Oberleutnant with two victories and the Spanish Cross in Gold with Swords, and was then appointed Gruppenkommandeur with 4/JG26 in Düsseldorf, remaining with the unit until departing for Jagdgeschwader 27 in early 1940, becoming the unit's Adjutant.

The day after scoring his first (World War Two) victory during the opening phase of the Battle of Britain, a RAF 236 Squadron Blenheim off the coast of Cherbourg on the 20th July 1940, he was appointed Gruppenkommandeur of I/JG27 to replace Major Helmut Riegel, shot down and killed by 501 Squadron Hurricanes off the Island of Alderney. After a brief participation In the Invasion of Yugoslavia, in April 1941 the unit moved to Ain-el Gazala, Libya, North Africa on 18 April 1941. He received the German Cross in Gold on 11 May 1942 as Hauptmann and Gruppenkommandeur I./JG27.

On 8th June 1942 he was promoted to Major and Geschwaderkommodore of JG27, which he successfully led until 22 April 1943 when he joined the Staff of General der Jagdflieger. In March 1943 Neumann was promoted to Oberstleutnant (Lieutenant Colonel), and later in 1944 to Oberst (Colonel). Eduard Neumann finished the war as the Commander of Fighter Forces in Northern Italy. Neumann was a believer in leading his squadron from the ground, and given these long periods of administrative command, Neumann's active combat career was somewhat limited, although he became one of the most respected and influential field commanders in the Luftwaffe. As a consequence he only achieved 13 victories during his Luftwaffe career (2 in Spain). In early 1945 Neumann was among those courageous men to protest against Hermann Göring in what came to be known as the 'Fighter Pilots Revolt' or 'Fighter Pilots Mutiny'.

One of Neumann's most successful achievements was the molding of the career of Hans-Joachim Marseille, giving the unorthodox fighter pilot a free reign to practice his tactics. Marseille went on to score 158 victories against the Western Allied Air Forces, a number no other pilot would match. [6]In 1989 Neumann and other members of JG27 erected a Pyramid with the co-operation of the Egyptian Government on the place that Marseille fell to his death.

After the War
After the war Eduard 'Edu' Neumann developed an engineering company. He continued to fly as hobby, after the banning of civilian flight clubs had been lifted. Neumann remained a member of the German Fighter Pilot's Association, until his death from a long illness aged 93.

Remarks: KIA after being shot down over Dover by Hurricanes. His keen interest in the German colonies inspired his designing the Groups (I/JG-27) famous Negro and Tigers head superimposed on a silhouette of Africa. One known victory, his 1st, a Morane 406 near Soissons/Laon, 20 May, 1940. His 2nd & 3rd, both Breguet 693's at Soissons, 9 June, 1940.

Gustav Rödel

Gustav Rödel was born on 24 October 1915 at Merseburg in Sachsen. He joined the Luftwaffe with the rank of Fahnenjunker in 1936 and underwent fighter pilot training. Rödel participated in the Spanish Civil War with the Condor Legion serving with J 88. He was awarded the Spanienkreuz in Bronze with Schwertern for his achievements there. On 15 July 1939, Rödel joined JG21. Leutnant Rödel was assigned to 2./JG21. He participated in the invasion of Poland gaining his first victory, a Polish P.24 fighter shot down near Warschau, on 1 September. However, on 7 September, he was forced down during a ground-strafing mission. It is unclear whether this was as a result of ground fire or mechanical failure. Fortunately, he was able to bring his machine back almost to the border and managed to avoid detection and returned to his unit the next day. Rödel transferred to the Geschwaderstab of JG27 on 24 November 1939.

He participated in the French campaign gaining a further three victories. In July 1940, Rödel was transferred to 4./JG27. On 7 September, Rödel was appointed Staffelkapitän of 4./JG27. By the end of September, he had recorded 14 victories, the majority of these falling in the aerial battles over England. II./JG27 participated in the invasion of the Balkans. Rödel recorded six victories in the aerial battles over Greece, including three Greek fighters shot down on 15 April 1941 and three RAF Hurricane fighters shot down on 20 April. Oberleutnant Rödel was awarded the Ritterkreuz on 22 June for 20 victories. Following the successful conclusion of the Balkan campaign, Rödel and 4./JG27 participated in the invasion of Russia. Rödel claimed a Russian SB-3 twin-engine bomber shot down on 25 June 1941 for his 21st victory. Shortly afterwards 4./JG27 were transferred to North Africa. Here, Rödel claimed his 30th victory on 4 December 1941, when he shot down a South African P-40 fighter near Bir el Gobi. On 20 May 1942, Rödel was appointed Gruppenkommandeur of II./JG27. He recorded his 40th victory on 23 May, when he shot down another P-40 fighter near Ras el Tin. On 21 July, he claimed four Hurricanes shot down to record his48th through 51st victories. He claimed three P-39 fighters shot down in the El Alamein area on 9 October (58-60). However, he had mis-identified his victims which were, in all probability, RAF P-40 fighters. In October 1942, Rödel claimed 15 victories, including three RAF P-40 fighters shot down on 24 October (64-66) and three fighters shot down on 27 October (67-69). On 1 November he claimed his 73rd victory, his last in North Africa. Rödel was appointed Kommodore of JG27 on 22 April 1943. He saw combat over Sicily and Greece in May.

On 22 May, he shot down three enemy aircraft (76-78). Major Rödel was awarded the Eichenlaub (Nr 255) on 20 June 1943. He recorded his 80th victory on 4 October and his 83rd on 10 October. Relocated to Germany and Reichsverteidigung duties, Rödel raised his victory total to 93, including many USAAF four-engine bombers. In June 1944, he led JG27 over the Invasion front. On 29 June, he claimed three USAAF P-47 fighters shot down (95-97). On 5 July, he claimed his 98th and last, victory a USAAF P-38 twin-engine fighter shot down near Angleure. In December 1944, Rödel was involved in the planning of Operation Bodenplatte. From the beginning of January 1945, he was serving on the staff of 2. Jagddivision, becoming Kommandeur on 1 February, a position he held until the end of the war. Post-war, Rödel joined the Bundesluftwaffe, retiring with the rank of Generalmajor. He died on 6 February 1995, aged 80.

Gustav Rödel was credited with 98 victories in 980 missions. He recorded one victory over the Eastern front. Of his 97 victories recorded over the Western front, 12 were four-engine bombers.

Remarks: MIA (and presumed killed) 22 June, 1941 in Wk# 4189 in the vicinity of Kamenki, near Grodno, S.U., after being rammed by an I-153 Chayka bi-plane of the 127th Fighter Aviation Regt., flown by Lt Petr Kuzmin. Kuzmin was killed and Schellmann bailed successfully, although his fate has remained a mystery. Obermaier suggests he was shot by the NKVD. 150 missions. Plus 12 victories in Spain, second only to the highest scorer in Spain, Werner Mölders. 12 victories in the West and 1 victory in the East, an I-16 on 22 June, 1941. His first victory, a Hurricane at Couly, 5 km east of Rethel, 15 May, 1940. His 2nd, a Lysander southeast of Brüssels, 17 May, 1940. His 3rd, a Lysander W of Tournai on 19 May, 1940. No.10, a Spitfire at Wareham on 27 August, 1940. Barbarossa pilot. Also served in I/JG-77 in September, 1939, in Poland, prior to JG-2 assignment.

Luftwaffe pilot Wolfgang Schellmann

Wolfgang Schellmann was born on 2 March 1911 at Kassel. Schellmann led 2./JG135 from 1 March 1935. On 19 December 1937, he was appointed Staffelkapitän of 1.Staffel of J88 of the Condor Legion.

He led the unit during the Spanish Civil War. He became the second highest scorer of the German fighter pilots, behind Werner Mölders (14 victories), achieving 12 victories. He was awarded the Spanienkreuz in Gold mit Schwertern und Brillanten. On his return from Spain, Schellmann was assigned to I./JG331. There followed a period, from 1 April 1939, where he served in a staff role. At the outbreak of World War 2, Schellmann was serving with I./JG77, participating in the invasion of Poland. He was then transferred to the staff of Luftflotte 2. On 15 December 1939, Hauptmann Schellmann was appointed Gruppenkommandeur of II./JG2. He claimed his first victory in World War 2 on 15 May 1940, when he shot down a RAF Hurricane fighter near Couly. By the end of the French campaign he had seven World War 2 victories to his credit. Schellmann was appointed Kommodore of JG2, during the Battle of Britain, on 3 September 1940. He was awarded the Ritterkreuz on 18 September 1940 for 10 victories. On 22 October 1940, Schellmann was appointed Kommodore of JG27, while the unit was based on the Channel Front. In spring of 1941, he led JG27 during the invasion of Yugoslavia and Greece.

He claimed one victory over a RAF Hurricane fighter in Greece bringing his victory total to 24, including his Spanish Civil War victories. Schellmann led JG27 for Operation Barbarossa, the invasion of Russia. On 22 June 1941, he was a victim of a 'taran' attack made by a Russian I-16 fighter in the vicinity of Kamenki, near Grodno in Russia. Schellmann baled out of his stricken Bf 109E-7 (W.Nr. 4189) '<<+' but thereafter little is known of his fate. It is thought the Russian NKVD shot him. He was to receive a posthumous promotion to Oberstleutnant.

Wolfgang Schellmann was credited with 25 victories in over 150 combat missions. He recorded 12 victories during the Spanish Civil War. Of his 13 victories recorded during World War 2, 12 were claimed over the Western front and one over the Eastern front.

Werner Schroer

Werner Schroer was born on 12 December 1918 at Mülheim in Ruhr. His Luftwaffe career began in 1937 as a member of the ground staff. In May 1940 he completed his flying training. On 27 August 1940 he joined 2./JG27 based on the Channel front. He flew his first combat missions during the Battle of Britain but did not claim any confirmed victories. In March 1941, I./JG27 was deployed to North Africa in order to support the Afrika Korps under the command of Erwin Rommel. Schroer claimed his first victory, a RAF Hurricane, on 19 April 1941, however, his Bf 109E (WNr 3790) was hit and he had to make a forced-landing near his airfield with 48 bullet holes in his aircraft.

On 21 April, in an engagement with RAF Hurricanes, an aircraft collided with his Bf 109E (WNr 4170) slightly injuring him and requiring him to make another forced-landing. By the end of 1941 his score stood at seven. In March 1942, he was appointed Adjutant of I./JG27. He was appointed Staffelkapitän of 8./JG27 on 22 June. In July he recorded 16 victories.

While flying to his base alone, over north west Egypt on 29 August 1941, Caldwell was attacked by two Bf 109s, in a deadly simultaneous approach at right angles. His attackers included one of Germany's most famous Experte (aces), Leutnant Werner Schröer of Jagdgeschwader 27 (JG 27), in a Bf 109E-7. Caldwell sustained three separate wounds from ammunition fragments and/or shrapnel; his Tomahawk was hit by more than 100 7.9 mm bullets and five 20 mm cannon shells, but he shot down Schröer's wingman, and heavily damaged Schröer's 'Black 8', causing Schröer to disengage.

On 9 September, he was awarded the Deutsches Kreuz in Gold. He shot down 13 enemy aircraft in September, including six on 15 September to record his 35th through 40th victories. In October, Schroer claimed 15 victories. Leutnant Schroer was awarded the Ritterkreuz on 21 October for 49 victories. On 4 November, Schroer, with Alfred Stückler (10 victories), shot down two four-engined B-24s. On 11 February 1943, Schroer reportedly shot down two RAF Beauforts, although he claimed them as B-26s.

When Major Gustav Rödel (98 victories, including 13 four-engined bombers, RK-EL) was appointed Kommodore of JG27, Hauptmann Schroer took his place as Gruppenkommandeur of II./JG27 on 22 April 1943. Operating over Sicily and southern Italy, between 29 April and 23 July, Schroer was to claim 22 Allied aircraft shot down, including 12 four-engined bombers. On 2 August, he became the 268th recipient of the Eichenlaub, awarded for his 84 victories. In August 1943, II./JG27 was redeployed to Wiesbaden-Erbenheim in Germany for Reichsverteidigung duties. On 6 September, Schroer led the Gruppe on an interception of a formation of 262 B-17s. In all 45 American bombers were lost including four shot down by II./JG27, three of which were claimed by Schroer as his victories 86 through 88.

On 3 March 1944, Major Schroer scored his 99th victory and was appointed Gruppenkommandeur of III./JG54, relieving Major Rudolf Sinner (39 victories, DK) who had been badly wounded on 6 March attacking a formation of four-engined bombers III./JG54 was based at Lüneberg and flew the Bf 109G-6.

On 24 May, Schroer shot down a P-51 and two P-47s for his 100th to 102nd victories. On 21 July 1944, Schroer relinquished command of III./JG54 to Hauptmann Robert 'Bazi' Weiss (121 victories, RK-EL, killed in action 29 December 1944). Schroer was transferred to a fighter pilot school as an instructor. On 4 August, he had to make a forced-landing when his engine malfunctioned. From November 1944 to February 1945 Schroer was retained in a training role.

On 14 February 1945, Schroer was appointed Kommodore of JG3. With this unit he quickly claimed 12 Russian aircraft destroyed. On 19 April 1945 he became the 144th recipient of the Schwertern. Werner Schroer survived the war. He died on 10 February 1985 in Munich, aged 67.

Werner Schroer was credited with 114 victories flying 197 missions. 102 of his victories were scored on the Western front, including 61 claimed over North Africa, and 26 four-engined bombers.

Known Aircraft: Bf 109E-3 (lost 5/12/40) & F in Staffel, Bf 109G in II Gruppe

Remarks: WIA 10 February, 1944 during aerial combat with '4 mots' near Lingen. WIA 17 July, 1943 during aerial combat with a B-17 near Esens. Injured in a crash on 21 June, 1943 when his A-5 accidentally touched the ground and crashed at the Aalborg West airfield (Source: Air War over Denmark). Magnus Report. A veteran pilot, his life was spared by Anton Hackl, when Keller and Lt Hermann Gern were found guilty of planning to flee the enemy near wars end. Gern was executed by firing squad on 7 May, 1945.
