Messerschmitt Bf 109 E-1 4./JG27 (W9+) Uffz. Morgenstern WNr 6336 collision France 01

Photo 01: This photograph is believed to show Uffz. Wilhelm Morgenstern's Bf 109E-1 'White 9', W.Nr. 6336, of 4/JG27 at Fiennes on following a collision with Obit. Emmerich Fluder's 'Black 15' of 5./JG27. Morgenstern was seriously injured in this incident.

Messerschmitt Bf 109 E-1/B 4./JG27 Paul Wacker (▲+G) ex 4./LG2 W.Nr 1289 crash-landed Worth Matravers, Dorset

Photo 01: Messerschmitt Bf 109E-1/B, W.Nr 1289, flown by Uffz. Paul Wacker of II./JG27, The markings on this aircraft originally led RAF Intelligence personnel to believe that Uffz. Wacker was attempting to deceive them by giving his unit as JG27. However, it was subsequently determined that the aircraft had recently been on the strength of II.(Schlacht)/LG2 and the markings had yet to be changed. The three victory bars on the tail therefore recorded the success of the original LG 2 pilot. The camouflage is believed to have consisted of 02 and a locally mixed grey and, when shot down, a triangular pennant was attached to the radio mast, as shown in the profile. As this pennant was quickly taken as a souvenir and does not appear in the photograph, details are based on notes given in the RAF Crash Report.

Messerschmitt Bf 109 E-1/B 4./JG27 Paul Wacker (▲+G) ex 4./LG2 W.Nr 1289 crash-landed Worth Matravers, Dorset

Photo 01: Uffz. Paul Wacker of II./JG27 was on a reconnaissance sweep over England on 30 November when his engine blew a cylinder at 26,000ft and resulted in the pilot making a forced landing on farmland at Worth Matravers, Dorset. On interrogation, Wacker explained that the machine had only recently been transferred from II.(Schlacht)/LG2, which was why it still carried the Schlacht Gruppe's triangle and a white 'G' outlined in red, but that in due course these markings would have been painted out and the usual JG27 numbering applied. At the time of its forced landing the aircraft had a small red and white pennant attached to the aerial mast, on which was the name 'Gerda', and there were three victory stripes on the tail.

5. Staffel II. Gruppe Jagdgeschwader 27 - 5./JG27

Messerschmitt Bf 109E4 5./JG27 (Black 6+-) Fw. Erich Braun W.Nr 2762 shot down Tudeley, England

Profile 00: Messerschmitt Bf 109E-4 W.Nr.2762 of 5./JG27 flown by Fw. Erich Braun. Bf 109E-4, 'Black 6', W.Nr 2762 of 5./JG27. At on , Fw. Erich Braun took off from a field aerodrome near St. Omer and, together with other aircraft from 5./JG27, met up with a small number of bomber aircraft at 15,000 feet over Cap Gris-Nez and proceeded to escort them to London. On the return journey, the formation was attacked from behind by Spitfires and Fw. Braun's aircraft was hit in one wing and the engine. The coolant ran out of the engine and Braun turned for home. However, he was followed by another Spitfire and was eventually forced to bale out over Tonbridge in Kent, leaving his aircraft to crash at Bank Farm, Tudeley. As the aircraft was almost completely destroyed, the accompanying profile shows only how the aircraft is believed to have been finished, and is based on photographs of other aircraft of II./JG27 and notes contained in the A.I.1(k) Report. In all probability, the aircraft was finished in an 02/71 upper scheme with a lightly applied mottle on the fin and fuselage, and photographs of other Staffel aircraft of the period show them to have a yellow cowling and rudder. As confirmed in the A.I.1.(k) Report, the machine conformed to Staffel custom in having a black number outlined in white and a red Gruppe bar aft of the Balkenkreuz.

Messerschmitt Bf 109 E-1 5./JG27 (Black 13+-) Erwin Daig crash-landed Storrington POW 0A-0B

Profile 00: Messerschmitt Bf 109E-1 of 5./JG27 flown by Oblt. Erwin Daig 'Black 13' was the Bf 109E-1 of 5./JG27 flown by Oblt. Erwin Daig during the early evening of 9 September and which forced landed near Storrington. Finished in a high demarcation 70/71 upper scheme, the fuselage sides carried a fairly dense but evenly applied overspray of 02. The cowling and rudder were yellow and although some reports suggest that half of the spinner was painted white, no photographic evidence of this has yet been seen. In keeping with 5.Staffel practice, the '13' was painted black but the Gruppe bar was red, both being thinly outlined in white. The aircraft was fitted with an earlier style of canopy retro-fitted with head, armor and while no ETC rack' was carried on the day it was shot down, it had been equipped to operate as a Jabo.

Messerschmitt Bf 109E-1 5./JG27 (Black 13+-) Erwin Daig crash-landed Storrington Sep 1940 01-03

Photo's 01-03: Later, as an Oberleutnant, Daig became Staffelkapitan of 5./JG27 and flew the Bf 109E-1 W.Nr.3488, 'Black 13'. On 9 September, Daig - not carrying the bomb rack on this occasion - took off on a fighter escort mission to accompany bombers to London. At 20,000 feet, his aircraft was attacked by fighters which damaged his fuel and engine cooling systems and Daig made a forced landing at Charity Farm near Parham, Sussex, where he was subsequently taken prisoner. His aircraft was later displayed in Birmingham, and is seen here in Dudley where the Henry Hall band is entertaining war-workers. For a while during the 1930s Henry Hall directed the BBC dance orchestra and was the most popular radio star in Britain.

Messerschmitt Bf 109 E-4 6./JG 27 (Y3+-) Julius Neumann forced landed Crepon, France 1940 01

Photo 01: Oblt Julius Neumann's camouflaged Bf 109 'Yellow 3' of 6./JG27 at Crepon, early August.
Photo's 01-02: Two views of Oblt. Julius Neumann's 'Yellow 3' of 6./JG27 showing the machine after crash-landing at Crepon in France following a mission over England, early August. Later, on POW , Neumann crash-landed again when, while escorting Ju-87s home from a raid on south coast airfields, his aircraft, 'Yellow 6' received radiator damage during combat with RAF fighters over the Isle of Wight. After making a forced landing at Shanklin Down, he fired his flare pistol into the radio compartment of the aircraft in an attempt to set it on fire and prevent the RAF learning the frequencies. He spent the rest of the war as a POW in Canada but, post-war, rejoined the Luftwaffe and retired with the rank of Oberst. He revisited the site of his crash-landing in 1994.

Messerschmitt Bf 109E 6./JG 27 (Yellow 6+-) August 1940

Photo 01: Lacking the standard yellow nose of the September-October period of the Battle, this photograph, probably taken in August shows a view typical of a dispersed Bf109E, in this case 'Yellow 6' of 6./JG27.
