Messerschmitt Bf 109E-4 Stab I./JG52 <<+ Wolfgang Ewald Coquelles France Sep 2 1940

Photo 01: Seated on the cockpit sill of his Bf 109E at Coquelles, on 2 September, is Hptm. Wolfgang Ewald of I./JG52. In this photograph, Ewald had only moments earlier returned from a sortie over England; in the background another Bf 109 may be seen still taxiing to its parking position. On this day Ewald claimed his first aerial victory since fighting in the Spanish Civil War. Ewald was Gruppenkommandeur of l./JG52 from 27 August 1940 to April 1942, when he became Kommandeur of lll./JG3. When shot down by Russian AA guns and taken prisoner on 14 July 1943, Ewald had a total of 78 aerial victories.

Profle 00: Messerschmitt Bf 109E-4 of JG52, '<1+' of JG52 exhibited some interesting markings. The aircraft was finished in an 02/71 camouflage with what appears to be a light mottling of 02 on the fuselage sides. The cowling, probably also the spinner and the rear half of the rudder, was painted yellow. While the black chevron was thinly outlined in white with a further black edging, the number '1' has no border. The JG52 emblem beneath the windscreen is a silver and black winged sword superimposed on a black and red shield. A rear-view mirror was fitted to the top of the windscreen framework.

Photo 01: An interestingly marked Bf 109E-4 of JG52. In addition to the yellow cowling, note that only the rear half of the rudder has been painted yellow. The use of numerals in addition to Stab markings was a feature often seen on Luftwaffe fighter aircraft and most frequently on the machines of JG52. This combination of number and symbol is believed to have been employed by units which applied a single chevron to indicate a Stab aircraft rather than the adjutant's machine.

One of the most enduring actions Ewald took part in was a strafing attack on RAF Manston during the Battle of Britain. The attack took place on 18 August 1940, known as The Hardest Day. Three fighters were destroyed, and six were damaged in the attack. Wolfgang Ewald was shot down by Soviet flak in July 1943 during the Battle of Kursk. He was taken prisoner and was held until 1949.
