Luftwaffe pilot Hans Ohly

Units: 1./JG-53 (1/40), Stfkpt 1./JG-53 (9/40-4/41), 7./JG-3 (5/42 S.U.)

Awards: EP, EK 1 & 2, Wound Badge, Fighter Operational Clasp

Known Aircraft: Bf 109E 'White1' (lost 1/40), Bf 109E-4 'White 7' (dam 8/19/40), Bf 109E-4 'Yel 7' (9/40), Bf 109F in JG-3

Remarks: WIA 2 January, 1940 during aerial combat with a Curtis, and making a force landing at Birkenfeld (Prien). His 'White 7' suffered chasis damage at Rennes on 19 August, 1940 (Prien). Three known victories, his 1st, 2nd & 3rd, a Blenheim near Sedan and two Battles southwest of Sedan, 14 May, 1940. His 4th a Hurricane at Portland on 25 August, 1940. His first known Soviet victory, his 7th an I-15 on 26 June, 1941. A MiG-1 on 23 May, 1942. Magnus, 15 victories. Deceased 12 October, 1998.

At the beginning of January 1940 I./JG53 was stationed at Griesheim near Darmstadt. On 2 January 1940 seven Me-109's took off during an alarm start and headed West. In the Netzarea they encountered 12 French Curtis aircraft and got involved in a dogfight. Hans Ohly was hit by Lt. Huve in the oil tank and wings and started losing oil immediately. Apart from Huve, Lt. Houze also shot down a Me-109, piloted by Lt. Pupp, who - like Ohly - had to make an emergency landing.

After being hit Ohly turned towards the East and tried to make it back to base. Near St. Wendel he became aware that this wouldn't be possible. He looked for a snowfield where he could crash land (near Gonnesweiler). In the meantime his Me-109 had started burning. He touched down with the plane in a field, however quite at its end. The aircraft slid through the snow and crashed vehemently against an oak tree in a forest.

The crash site was situated in the Winkelwiesheck (today the Northeastern shore of the Bostal Lake). Not far from there was an aerial observation post near the Loosberg Hill whose Dersonnel had observed the crash landing. Afterwards Ohly couldn't tell how he had managed to get out of his Ship, whether he had been hurled out because the belts had been torn apart or whether he had bailed out. People told him they found him standing 10 yards from his aircraft. The men from the observation post supported him under the arms and took him to their post. From there he was transferred into Birkenfeld Hospital. He had burned legs and a compression fracture in the third and fourth vertebras which paralysed him for 8 weeks and confined him to bed. Soon he was taken to Franfurt to the hospital there. He resumed flying in May 1940.
