Midair collision between two 4./JG54 Bf 109E4's White 5 and White 6 over Surrey 30th Aug 1940

Artwork: Phenomenal artwork by Piotr Forkasiewicz....
Two Me109s collide south of London: 11.00hrs -12.00hrs Aug 30th Clear sky at 15,000 ft with broken cloud below at 5,000 ft. Lots of 109s and Hurricanes in combat in the distance. II/JG54 Me109E-4 Wn.1643 White 5+ Collided with Oblt Hans Rath. Crashed at Layhams Farm, Addington, Surrey. Ff: Lt Rudolf Ziegler baled out and landed near Holland Post Office, Oxted, Surrey - PoW. and 4/JG54 Me109E-4 Wn.6072 White 6+ On a free-lance patrol pilot was just getting into a position to attack a Hurricane, when his aircraft was rammed by Lt Rudolf Ziegler’s aircraft which cut off the tail and he baled out at nearly 20,000 ft. Ff: Oblt Hans Rath – PoW. Aircraft crashed at Fickleshole Farm, Chelsham, Surrey. Weather Generally clear with only scattered cloud- 5,000 ft. As for the BF109 collision those are the details I got from Mark Postlethwaite. Full report is in Battle of Britain Combat Archive vol.8

30.8.40 Lt Rudolf Ziegler StabII/JG54, now according to Nigel Parker's " Luftwaffe Crash Archive Vol.3" , he states Ziegler was flying W.Nr 1643 wht 5+ Whereas Prien in his " Jagdfliegerverband Vol 4-II " states W.Nr 6072 (-+ Also, 30.8.40 Oblt Hans Rath 4/JG54 W.Nr 6072 wht 6+, the same sources again differ, Prien says W.Nr 1643 wht 5+ ( who is right ? ) Nobody can confirm the identities of these two aircraft. Surviving records are contradictory & do not support such positive assertions. As you already know, the GQM Returns simply record Bf109E-4 (6072) for Oberlt RATH & Bf109E-4 (1643) for Lt ZIEGLER both of II./JG54 lost as result of a collision in combat over London. The NVMs of II./JG54 further confirm that Oberlt Johann RATH of 4./JG54 lost his tail & baled out over South London (witnessed by Fw HEPPLE) while Lt Rudolf ZIEGLER (Gruppe TO) of Stab II./JG54 collided with the wreckage.

The collision occurred over the Chelsham area and both pilots were reported in their parachutes ‘north of Westerham’ in an ARP message logged at 11.52 hours. RAF Intelligence A.I.1.(k) Report 354/1940 reported RATH’s aircraft down at Ledgers Farm, Chelsham, at 11.55 hours & carrying a ‘White 6’. However, photos of the crash site prove that it came down at Fickleshole Farm which is immediately adjacent to that location. The bulk of the wreckage fell in fields near Chelsham Church while the tail fluttered down at Forty Acre Bank. It was spirited away to Broom Lodge where Mr Pill kept it for many years. Depending on which reports you wish to believe, RATH either came down in Granville Road in Limpsfield or at Meadowside in De Tillers Lane.

Similarly, A.I. 1.(k) Report 355/1940 recorded ZIEGLER, down at Oxted which is where he landed by parachute near Thrubhurst Cottages & Holland Post Office. An ARP Report provides a more accurate location of the actual crash site as ‘1/4 mile south of Layhams Farm’ and again photos confirm this as the location. ZIEGLER was highly security conscious and seems to have misled RAF Intelligence into believing he was flying ‘White 5’ probably in order to disguise his true identity as a member of the Stabsschwarm. However, this is something that should have been self-evident to A.I.1.(k) given his ID number (71121/4).

Finally, and just to muddy already murky water, a subsequent A.I.1.(g) Report No.27 dated 2.9.1940 describes Stab markings found on wreckage of the ‘Me109 crashed at Fickleshole Farm, near Chelsham’. Such markings were clearly more appropriate to ZIEGLER’s aircraft than that of RATH all of which points to even more confusion in the RAF Intelligence reporting of both crashes. Both sites have been excavated post-war but to my knowledge nothing was recovered to permit more positive identification of either machine.

Photo 02: Philipp claimed his first victory while with l./JG76 in Poland and seven more during the Western campaign. Here, all eight victories maybe seen on his aircraft's rudder. By 22 October 1940, Philipp's total had risen to 20 victories, for which he was awarded the Ritterkreuz, and by the end of the year his score had risen to 23.

This aircraft also carried an interestingly modified camouflage. This was in the form of an irregular spray of RLM 70 and RLM 71 greens for an overall darkening of the airframe. This form of modifying the camouflage appeared quite often within JG 54. The rudder bears nine Abschussbalken, or kill markings. As with Black '10', this aircraft also came to III./JG 77 from II./JG 54, as indicated by the 'Aspern Lion' in the crest on the sides of the fuselage. The lion symbolizes the Viennese quarter of Aspern. Up to the end of the Second World War, Aspern, founded in 1912, was the headquarters of Austrian flying – military and civilian. After the end of the war, it was used by Soviet occupational forces, and daily civilian action was transferred to Schwechat.

Repainted in an 02/71 upper scheme, the sides of the fuselage carried a mixed 02/71 mottle while the underside 65 wrapped unevenly around the leading edges of the wings and tail plane. The aircraft was fitted with the later, heavier framed canopy and a rear-view mirror. The cowling was yellow and the spinner, painted half-white and half 70, was fitted with a red nose cap. The 'Lion of Aspern' emblem of II./JG54 was carried beneath the windscreen on both sides of the fuselage.

Photo 01: Such was the limited endurance of the standard Bf 109E that after a sortie to Southern England, many aircraft barely managed the return flight across the Channel. This Bf 109E-1 from 5,/JG54 has been retro-fitted with a capped spinner. The Gruppe emblem was 'handed' so that the head of the lion always faced the nose of the aircraft. The II./JG54 emblem a black rectangle was first applied to the aircraft, then the red sections added. The white detail was then sprayed through a single stencil to ensure a quick yet neat finish.

Profile 00: Messerschmitt Bf 109E-4, W.Nr.1988, of 5./JG54 flown by Lt. Joachim Schypek. Finished in a high demarcation 02/71 scheme, the fuselage sides carried a crosshatched pattern of green 71, between the arms of which were applied patches of 02 in varying densities. On the rudder, only the rear edge was painted yellow, and the upper surface camouflage remained on the otherwise all-yellow cowling. Four black Abschüssbalken were painted on the rudder and represented one Curtiss over France, two Spitfires over England and a Blenheim over France. The spinner carried a red tip with the remainder painted half-white and half black-green. The red '7' was thinly outlined in white and beneath the windscreen was a black rectangle, the beginnings of II./JG54's 'Lion of Aspern' emblem.

Photo’s 01-02: 'Red 7', the Bf 109E-4, W.Nr.1988, of Lt. Joachim Schypek of JG54 after forced landing at Broom Hill near Lydd during the morning of 25 October. According to the report on his interrogation, Lt. Schypek was with the unit medical officer that morning who told him he was not to fly. Nevertheless, when the rest of his Staffel started engines and set off on a Jabo escort mission to London, Schypek could not resist and, running out to his aircraft, he took off after them. A large number of Bf 109s were on this operation but before the bombers reached their objective, Schypek, flying near Biggin Hill at 26,000 ft, was attacked by about ten 41Sqn. Spitfires. Schypek successfully avoided several simultaneous attacks from both sides but did not see until too late that F/O Peter Brown was on his tail. 'Red 7' received many hits which damaged the radiator and Schypek could also hear bullets striking his armour plating. The Spitfire did not make another attack but, owing to the rising engine temperature, Schypek was forced to land.

The finish was applied at unit level, though probably with the agreement of the RLM, and is believed to have been devised by II./JG54. An almost identical finish has also been observed in use by JG54 in the Balkans and in Russia. On this machine, the 70 spinner had a yellow cap and a white quarter segment.

Luftwaffe pilot Hans Philipp

Hans Philipp was born on March 17, 1917 in Meissen in Saxony.
As a member of I./JG76 (later to become II./JG54), Philipp saw action over Poland and scored his first victory. Later during the Battle of Britain, Hans Philipp was made the Staffelkapitan of 4./JG54.

Philipp soon gained a reputation for being a superb dogfighter, often preferring to battle it out with enemy fighters rather than bombers. Philipp's successes in combat were recognized on November 4, 1940 when he was awarded the Knights Cross for his twenty victories to date. In typical celebratory fashion, he claimed a Hurricane ten days later.

On March 26, 1941, Yugoslavia pronounced its defiance of Hitler and joined the Allied cause. Fearing offensive operations from Yugoslavian territory, Hitler issued Directive No. 25 - the subjugation of Yugoslavia and Greece. On the second day of attacks, April 7, 1941, the Grunherz Geschwader engaged the Jugoslovensko Kraljevsko Ratno Vazduhoplovstvo (JKRV) in a massive air battle. In daring attacks, the JKRV manned Me 109s attacked twenty-six Ju 87 Stuka dive-bombers, escorted by double that amount of fighters. During this dogfight, Hans Philipp managed to down two of the JKRV 109s.

Operation Barbarossa saw Philipp's score begin to climb. On August 24, 1941, Philipp became the 33rd member of the German Armed Forces to be awarded the Oak Leaves to the Knights Cross. On a sad note, Franz Eckerle, Kommandeur of I./JG54, was posted missing on February 14, 1942. The high scoring Hans Philipp was chosen as his successor. As Kommandeur of I./JG54, he oversaw the early careers of many young fighter pilots, among them Walter Nowotny.

March 1942 saw Philipp reach some incredible milestones. On March 12, 1942, he became the first member of JG54 to be awarded the Swords to the Knight Cross (8th overall). Even more remarkable, on March 31, 1942 Philipp became the fourth Luftwaffe fighter pilot to achieve 100 victories.

April 1, 1943 saw Philipp transferred to Defense of the Reich duties as Kommodore of JG1. There he battled the growing menace of the 8th Air Force and continued to score victories as his duties allowed.

The following is an excerpt (in italics) from Eric Mombeek's book 'Defending the Reich: The History of Jagdgeschwader 1 - Oesau' Reichmarshall Goring issued the following edict after an 8th AF raid on October 4, 1943:

There are no meterological conditions which would prevent fighters from taking off and engaging in combat. Every fighter pilot taking off in a machine not showing any sign of combat, or without having recorded a victory will be prosecured by a court-martial. In the case of where a pilot uses up his ammunition, or if his weapons are unusable, he should ram the enemy bomber.

Kommodore Philipp's response: 'As far as I'm concerned, I categorically refuse to allow myself to be held to such advice; I know what I have to do!'

On October 8, 1943, the 8th AF dispatched 156 bombers to targets in Bremen and Vegesack. The force was escorted by 250+ Thunderbolts from six different fighter groups.

The Stab Flight of the Geschwader heard Philipp announce a victory over a Thunderbolt. The last tranmission from him was: 'Reinhardt, attack!' Feldwebel Reinhardt was Philipp's wingman on this day. He last saw the Kommodore's aircraft disappear in a cloud. Reinhardt was wounded after colliding with an enemy aircraft, but made a successful forced landing. Later that evening, the Geschwader learned that their Kommodore had been shot down and killed.

In the all too brief career of this dogfight artist, Philipp scored 206 victories over the course of 500+ missions
