Hurricane Mark IIB Z5252 USSR flown by Lt. P.P. Markov 1942

This plane may have been shot down by Heinz Beyer
Hurricane Mark IIB 'Tropical' Serial number Z5252 Built by Gloster Aircraft Co. in the summer of 1941.
Sent to the Soviet Union under the Lend-Lease program in August 1941.
Failed to return from a mission on June 2,1942 while being piloted by Lt. P.P. Markov.
The plane recieved damage from Bf-109's and was forced to make an emergency landing on a still-frozen lake 4 miles west of Murmansk. Before a salvage team could recover the plane it broke through the ice. It is believed that one of two Luftwaffe pilots did the damage to Z5252, Hermann Segatz or Heinz Beyer. The aircraft was found in 2003 and recovered in 2004, breaking in half in the process.
See west666's link in his comment for more info and recovery photos. The plane is in remarkably good shape for spending 62 years on the bottom of a lake.

AISBIZ Interesting to note that neither pilot claimed this aircraft.

Heinrich Bartels

Heinrich Bartels was born on 13 July 1918 at Linz in Austria. From early summer 1941, Bartels served with Ergänzungsstaffel/JG26 on the Channel front. He recorded his first victory on 19 August, when he shot down a RAF Spitfire fighter. He claimed a second Spitfire shot down on 27 August.

Bartels was transferred to 11./JG1 on 27 January 1942. On 10 March, 11./JG1 was redesignated 8./JG5. Bartels was to become one of the most successful pilots of 8./JG5. This unit was under the command of Hauptmann Hermann Segatz (40 victories, DK-G) and was based on the Northern or Polar front. Bartels recorded 47 Russian aircraft shot down in 100 missions in this theatre, including 21 victories in September alone.

On 13 November 1942 he was awarded the Ritterkreuz for 46 victories. In the spring of 1943, Bartels was transferred to JG27 based in the Mediterranean theatre. Oberfeldwebel Bartels was assigned to 11./JG27. He had 49 victories to his credit at this time. Bartels gained 14 victories in October 1943, including three USAAF P-38 twin-engine fighters shot down on 8 October (54-56) and five victories, including a further three P-38s, shot down on 25 October (57-61). By the end of 1943, Bartels score stood at 73, including four victories on 15 November (67-70), all P-38 fighters shot down on one mission over Greece. Bartels operated on Reichsverteidigung duties in April and May 1944. He claimed 12 victories, including three victories in a day on two occasions, before deploying to the Invasion front.

Here, in five missions, he recorded 11 victories. For these achievements, Bartels was nominated for the Eichenlaub. By 23 December 1944, Bartels' victory count had increased to 98. At this time he was serving with 15./JG27 formed on 12 June 1944. On 23 December, he took off at 11:00 with his flight. His wingman was Oberfähnrich Rolf Brand. Gaining altitude they flew to the Köln – Bonn area. Over Bonn, at 7500 metres, they saw fuel tanks dropping in front of their noses. Those drop tanks came from P-47 fighters of the USAAF 56th Fighter Group 'Red Noses' in pursuit of the aircraft flown by Heinz Rossinger (3 v.). Bartels promptly shot down one of the American fighters on Rossinger's tail. It was his 99th and last victory. Heinrich Bartels failed to return. 24 years later, on 26 January 1968, Bartels' Bf-109G-10 (W.Nr. 130359) Yellow 13 was found at Villip near Bad Godesberg. In the cockpit was the intact parachute...

Heinrich Bartels flew about 500 combat missions and shot down 99 enemy aircraft: 49 on the Eastern
front with JG5 and 50 with JG27 in the Mediterranean and in defence of Germany. His score included
nine P-47s eleven P-51s and fourteen P-38s!

Heinrich Ehrler

Heinrich Ehrler was born on 14 September 1917 at Oberbalbach in Nordbaden. He joined the army in 1935 and served with a flak unit in the Spanish Civil War. In 1940 he began flying training. On completion of his training he was posted to 4./JG77 operating from bases in Norway. He gained his first victory in May 1940 shooting down a RAF Blenheim bomber. 4./JG77 was redesignated 4./JG5 on 1 February 1941.

Ehrler recorded his second victory on 19 February 1942 and was now operating over the Northern front from bases in Finland and northern Norway. He was to score a total of 11 victories with the unit before he was promoted to Staffelkapitan of 6./JG5 on 22 August. Between January and September 1942, Ehrler recorded 54 victories. Leutnant Ehrler was awarded the Ritterkreuz on 4 September for 64 victories. On Saturday, 27 March 1943, Ehrler, in short order, downed five Russian Kittyhawks and Airacobras in aerial combat. While attempting to engage another Russian fighter his aircraft was hit by a 20mm cannon shell forcing his disengagement from the battle. He returned safely to base with slight wounds. On 1 June, he was named Gruppenkommandeur of II./JG5. On 6 June, he claimed four Russian flown Hurricanes to record his 96th through 99th victories. He gained his 100th victory the next day.

After recording his 112th victory on 2 August, he was awarded the Eichenlaub (Nr 265). He shot down eight enemy aircraft on 17 March 1944 to record his 124th to 131st victories. He bettered this effort on 25 May 1944 downing nine to record his 147th to 155th victories. On 1 August 1944 he was promoted to Kommodore of JG5.

On 12 November 1944 a message reporting incoming British bombers reached the 27 year old Geschwaderkommodore of JG5. Ehrler, with his score at 199 victories, scrambled to intercept the Lancasters of 9 and 617 Squadrons at the head of a Gruppe of Bf 109s. The fighters were too late. The British Lancasters sank the battleship Tirpitz north of Tromso with the loss of a thousand sailors.

Ehrler was called to account for this disaster and at his court martial was accused of flying to get his 200th victory, instead of guiding his fighters from ground control. Ehrler was sentenced to three years Festungshaft, a more honourable punishment than imprisonment. Ehrler had been nominated for the Schwerten prior to the battleship disaster. The award was never made. He was stripped of his command.

However, he was able to record his 200th victory on 20 November 1944. Ehrler joined JG7 on 27 February 1945. His comrades knew that the old fire had been burned out of the gifted Ehrler. On 4 April 1945, he shot down two B-17s. Ehrler then reported he had run out of ammunition and rammed a third.

Erhler did not return from the mission, and his body was found the next day at Schaarlippe near Berlin. Heinrich Ehrler achieved 208 victories, of which about 10 were recorded over the Western front. Included in his score are eight victories flying the Me 262.

Oberfeldwebel Rudolf 'Rudi' Muller

Rudolf 'Rudi' Muller was born on 21 November 1920 at Frankfurt am Main. He joined the army and served with the Signal Corps. He transferred to the Luftwaffe in 1940 and underwent pilot training. In August 1941, Muller was transferred from Erganzungsgruppe/JG77, based in Rumania, to 1./JG77 based in northern Norway. On 12 September, he claimed his first victory when he shot down a Russian I-16 fighter. In March 1942, 1./JG77 was redesignated 6./JG5. On 23 April, he shot down five Russian Hurricane fighters to record his 11th through 15th victories. Muller was to be particularly successful against Hurricane fighters supplied to the Russians under lend-lease by Britain. He recorded 15 victories in April, of which 12 were Hurricanes. In May, Muller claimed 13 victories, including 12 Hurricanes, to raise his victory total to 38. Some sources indicate that it was Muller who shot down and killed the Russian ace Podpolkovnik Boris Safanov (15 +14 shared victories) over the Allied supply convoy PQ-16 on 30 May.

He recorded his 40th victory on 17 June when he shot down one of two Hurricane fighters he claimed that day. Feldwebel Muller was awarded the Ritterkreuz on 19 June, by which time his victory total had reached 46. He was then granted a short leave. On his return he claimed 16 victories in August, including his 50th on 4 August, yet another Hurricane, and his 60th on 25 August. Muller's most successful month was September, when he recorded 18 victories, including seven enemy aircraft shot down on 27 September (75-81). He shot down 6./JG5's 500th victory on 13 March for his 92nd, and last, victory. On 19 April 1943, Muller was obliged to make a forced-landing in his Bf-109 G-2/R6 (W.Nr. 14810) 'Yellow 3' on the frozen Lake Bolschoje after aerial combat with 30-40 enemy aircraft over Murmansk. It is thought Muller was shot down by Russian ace Mladshii Leitenant Nikolai Bokii (14 +1 shared victories) of 2nd GuIAP, VVS.

He was captured some hours later by a Russian ski patrol. He is said to have been seen in a prison at Murmansk in 1947 but was never repatriated to Russia. Another source indicates that Muller was shot trying to escape from a Russian prison camp in October or November 1943.

'Rudi' Muller was credited with 92 victories. All his victories were recorded over the Eastern front and included at least 35 Hurricane fighters.

Horst Carganico

Horst Carganico was born on 27 September 1917 at Breslau. He was the son of General der Flieger, Victor Carganico. Horst joined the Luftwaffe in 1937 as a Fahnenjunker. He learned to fly at pilot school at Berlin-Johannisthal. At the outbreak of World War 2, Carganico was serving as Technical Officer on the staff of JG1. From spring 1940, he served as Adjutant of II./JG77. He served in Norway with this unit arriving there on 11 April 1940. He gained his first victory on 21 June 1940 when he claimed a RAF Hereford near Bergen. He had, in fact, shot down a RAF Beaufort attempting to bomb the German battlecruiser Scharnhorst near Bergen. Several victories followed before II./JG77 was transferred to the Channel Coast on 9 November 1940. He claimed his fifth victory on 30 November, when he shot down a RAF Blenheim bomber. A promotion to Oberleutnant occurred around this time. Carganico was appointed Staffelkapitän of 1./JG77 on 1 January 1941 and joined the unit operating from Sola, Norway. He transferred with the unit to Kirkenes in May 1941. He then served as Staffelkapitän with JGzbV which was formed from 1., 14. and 15./JG77. On 25 July, he claimed a Russian flying boat shot down. Carganico was awarded the Ritterkreuz on 25 September for achieving 27 victories: only the second fighter pilot in the north to do so (first was Hugo Dahmer). In January 1942 I./JGzbV was incorporated into JG5 as I./JG5.

I./JG5 was renamed 6./JG5 in March 1942. Carganico retained leadership of the Staffel through these changes. In spring 1942, he claimed 23 victories in the six weeks to the end of June. Hauptmann Carganico was appointed Gruppenkommandeur of II./JG5 in April 1942. Carganico suffered engine failure in Bf 109F-4 (W.Nr. 10256) on 22 July necessitating a forced landing at Murovskij. He returned to his unit the next day.

On 12 August, Carganico was part of a Schwarm escorting a reconnaisance Fw 189 over the Liza front and Murmansk. The formation was intercepted by Russian fighters and in the ensuing combat Carganico's aircraft received hits. The damage was sufficient to force an emergency landing in Bf 109F-4 (W.Nr. 10132) near Motovsk. He evaded capture and returned safely to his unit the next day.

On 26 March 1944 Hauptmann Carganico was appointed Gruppenkommandeur of I./JG5 participating in the Reichsverteidigung. Following aerial combat with USAAF B-17 four-engined bombers on 27 May 1944, he was killed when Bf-109G-5 (W.Nr. 110087) crashed into the ground after hitting high tension cables while Carganico was attempting to make a forced landing near Chevry, France.

Horst Carganico shot down 60 enemy aircraft in about 600 missions. He recorded six victories over the Western front.
