USMC ace 1st Lt John F Bolt VMF 214 Black Sheep taken at Vella La Vella 5th Dec 1943
John Franklin Bolt (19 May 1921 – 8 Sept. 2004), US Marine Corps (USMC) First Lt. John F. Bolt, Marine Fighter Squadron 214 (VMF-214) 'Black Sheep' taken at Vella La Vella, Dec. 5, 1943 as he stands in front of a USMC F4U Corsair. He is an Ace Pilot credited with 6 kills. Bolt continued his service through the Korean War, flying F-86 Sabres he had additional 6 kills with a total of 12 aerial kills.
Harry Johnson, the last of the original members of the Black Sheep squadron formed by Greg 'Pappy' Boyington, passed away in his home in Destin, Florida on the night of December 3-4. Nicknamed “Skinny,” Harry joined the squadron in November 1943 as a young replacement and participated in their second combat tour, which included the rough missions over Rabaul. He claimed his one and only victory—a Zero—on the last day of the 6-week
1st Lieut William Case, Marine Attack Squadron VMF-214, 'Black Sheep', at Russell Islands, 5 Oct 43. With 8 kills, 22 y/o Case was the 3rd highest scoring Black Sheep, and maybe the luckiest. Like most pilots in Aug 1943 he only served w/ VMF-214 one tour. His last day in combat, 18 Oct, Case - a short guy - lowered his seat from the normal position of fully elevated. The only time he did so. A bullet from a 'Zero' fighter smashed thru the cockpit, and just bloodied his scalp. He died 1995.
Capt. Paul A. 'Moon' Mullen (Jan. 24, 1920 - Feb. 12, 1946) Ace of VMF-214 'Black Sheep' with 6.5 victories.
