A mechanic is seen here servicing Focke-Wulf Fw 189 A-2, HI+AN of the 5.(H)/12, in the area of Gomel-Sild on the Eastern Front during the summer of 1942. Visible on the engine cowling is the Staffel emblem of a dark-skinned Arabian boy wearing a red suit and fez holding on to a yellow rope while raising a dark-coloured flute to his mouth. Formed at Milnster-Loddenheide in 1940, by May 1942 the Staffel was operating under NAGr. 16 within Generaloberst von Richthofen's Luftflotte 4 where it remained until March 1943, when it was redesignated as the 2./NAGr.2.

A mechanic is seen here servicing Focke-Wulf Fw 189A-2, H1+EN of the 5.(H)/12, in the area of Gomel-Sild on the Eastern Front during the summer of 1942. 5. Aufklärungsstaffel (Heeres)/12. In spite of its slender appearance, the twin-boom fuselage of the Fw 189 was immensely tough. This example was one of the reconnaissance assets used by Luftflotte 4, and flew out of Poltava in the Ukraine. Visible on the engine cowling is the Staffel emblem of a dark-skinned Arabian boy wearing a red suit and fez holding on to a yellow rope while raising a dark-coloured flute to his mouth.
