Krafft was flying this aircraft on 14 December 1942 when it was hit by Soviet anti-aircraft fire. Krafft was observed baling out and was posted missing but, in fact, it is now known that he landed in enemy territory and was beaten to death by Russian soldiers.

Nicknamed "Gaudi", or "Fun", on account of his sense of humour, he claimed four victories during the Western campaign before being seriously wounded in May 1940. He returned to his unit in June 1941 and, on the opening day of Barbarossa, when he made his first war flight since being wounded, claimed four victories. By the end of 1941, Krafft had 34 Luftsiegen.

Attack versions

While nearly all variants of the Fw 190 could carry bombs and other air-to-ground ordnance, there were two dedicated attack versions of the Fw 190. The Luftwaffe was looking for aircraft to replace the Henschel Hs 123 biplane, which were seriously outmatched in 1942, as well as the slow and heavy Junkers Ju 87. The excellent low-level performance and reasonably high power of the Fw 190 suggested it would be a 'natural' in this role. Two versions of the Fw 190 were eventually built, customized for this mission.

Focke-Wulf Fw 190 A-3 2./JG51 Black 2 WNr 2278 Erich Pflaum 85km from St. Peterburg Sep 29th 1942

Profile: I.Gruppe JG 51 was, in the summer of 1942, chosen to be the first of the units serving on the Eastern Front to be re-equipped with the Fw 190. It moved to Königsberg, where it was assigned a mix of Fw 190A-1, A-2 and A-3s, and after conversion training returned back to the northern sections of the Eastern Front at the end of August 1942. The first Fw 190A-3 from I./JG 51 that was lost in combat was piloted by Uffz. Erich Pflaum on September 29th, 1942. The pilot, although injured, survived. The aircraft flown by Erich Pflaum was painted in a non-standard scheme consisting of two shades of dark green. Exactly what these two greens were is as yet unclear. One possibility is a combination of RLM 70 and 71. The yellow lower wingtips, the fuselage band in the same colour below the fuselage cross identified this aircraft as having served on the Eastern Front. The engine cowl carries the unit marking of JG 51 and below the windscreen is the insignia of I./JG 51. The original yellow fuselage band is still visible under the camouflage paint. The thin black tape bordering the yellow band below the fuselage cross probably served to sharpen its edge during the paint work conducted on the aircraft.

Photo: 'Black 7', an Fw 190 A of 8./JG51 after a landing accident in slippery conditions, probably in the early winter of 1943. The snow must have fallen quite recently as the uppersurfaces of this aircraft retain an overall dark green camouflage which has apparently been applied over the original RLM 74/75/76 scheme, traces of which are still visible around the swastika. The small vertical III. Gruppe bar in white is characteristic of III./JG51 which also adopted a narrow, yellow rear fuselage band, the upper part of which has, in this instance, been overpainted to improve the aircraft's camouflage when viewed from above. The usual yellow panel is visible under the nose and the underside of the wingtips would also have been yellow.

Heinrich "Gaudi" Krafft

Heinrich "Gaudi" Krafft was born on 13 August 1914 at Bilin in Bohmen. He joined the army and served with Infanterieregiment 9 before transferring to the Luftwaffe in 1936. In 1939, Krafft was serving with JG51. Oberleutnant Krafft was assigned to 3./JG51. He claimed his first victories during the French campaign, when he shot down two RAF Hurricane fighters near Rotterdam on 11 May 1940. He was wounded in aerial combat during May, which resulted in his being out of action for a considerable period. Krafft had four victories to his credit at the time. Krafft was appointed Staffelkapitan of 3./JG51 on 11 November 1940 and led the unit for the invasion of Russia. On the first day of the campaign, 22 June 1941, Krafft shot down four Russian aircraft to record his fifth through ninth victories. He recorded his 10th victory on 29 June when he shot down a Russian I-16 fighter. On 31 August he claimed three DB-3 twin-engined bombers (16-18). His 20th victory was achieved on 4 October when he claimed another I-16 shot down. On 6 December, Krafft shot down three enemy aircraft to record his 29th through 31st victories. By the end of 1941, he had increased his victory total to 34. On 17 February 1942, Krafft shot down a Russian I-61 fighter to record his 40th victory.

Oberleutnant Krafft was awarded the Deutsches Kreuz on 25 January 1942 and the Ritterkreuz on 18 March 1942 for 48 victories recorded in over 300 missions. On 1 June 1942, Hauptmann Krafft was appointed Gruppenkommandeur of I./JG51 after Hauptmann Josef Fozo (27 victories, RK) was injured in a landing accident the previous day. In August 1942, I./JG51 transferred to Jesau for conversion to the Fw 190 A-2 and A-3, returning to action on 6 September as the first unit to introduce the new fighter on the Eastern Front. Shortly afterwards, I./JG51 was transferred to the Leningrad sector as the Russians attempted to lift the siege of the city. Krafft claimed his 60th victory on 30 September. Krafft was shot down by Russian Flak in Fw 190A-3 "Black <<" (W.Nr. 130539) south of Belyi on 14 December 1942. He survived the crash-landing but was beaten to death by Russian soldiers.

Heinrich "Gaudi" Krafft flew a total of 350 missions and claimed 78 victories, all but four on the Eastern Front, including at least nine Il-2 Sturmoviks.

Oskar 'Ossi' Romm - Oberleutnant

Oskar "Ossi" Romm was born on 18 December 1919 at Haindorf in the Isergebirge region of Friedland/Sudetenland. He joined the Luftwaffe in 1939 and trained as a fighter pilot from July 1941 to August 1942. Romm was posted to JG 51 based on the Eastern front on 11 September 1942. Unteroffizier Romm was assigned to 1./JG 51. His first combat mission on 29 September ended with a belly landing and some minor injuries. His second resulted in his first victory when he shot down a Russian Il-2 Sturmovik ground-attack aircraft on 4 December, but was again followed by a belly landing and further injuries. He then enjoyed spectacular success. He shot down three enemy aircraft on 13 July 1943 to record his 18th through 20th victories, five on 14 August (32-36) and six on 20 August (43-48).

From late August 1943, Romm undertook a period of instructing with Ergänzung-Jagdgruppe Ost. He returned to 1./JG 51 in January 1944. He shot down six enemy aircraft on 5 February (71-76). Oberfeldwebel Romm was awarded the Ritterkreuz on 29 February for 76 victories. On 1 June 1944, Leutnant Romm was transferred to the Stabsschwarm of IV./JG 3 on Reichverteidigung duties. On 7 July, he was appointed Staffelkapitän of 15./JG 3. He shot down his first four-engine bomber on 7 July 1944. In all he accounted for eight four-engine bombers while with the unit, including three USAAF B-24s in one attack on 27 September 1944.

In November 1944, Romm was transferred to lead 4./JG 3 and then to the Stabsschwarm of I./EJG 1. Romm was appointed Staffelkapitän of 15./JG 3, based on the Eastern front, on 15 January 1945. There the unit undertook fighter-bomber and ground attack missions against the advancing Russian army. Romm was credited with 34 tanks destroyed as well many other vehicles. On 18 February 1945, Oberleutnant Romm became Gruppenkommandeur of IV./JG 3, taking over from Major Erwin Bacsila (34 victories, DK). He recorded a further six victories to bring his victory total to 92. Romm's wartime career ended on 24 April 1945, when he was severely injured in a crash-landing when, following aerial combat with Russian Il-2 Sturmoviks south of Stettin, his engine overheated.

Oskar Romm accounted for 92 enemy aircraft in 283 combat missions, including 54 fighter-bomber missions. He recorded 82 victories over the Eastern front including at least 34 Il-2 Sturmovik ground-attack aircraft. Of his 10 victories recorded over the Western front, eight were four-engine bombers.

Leutnant Josef 'Pepi' Jennewein

Josef "Pepi" Jennewein was born on 21 November 1919 at St Anton in the Tyrolean Alps, Austria. He was one of the best skiers in the international circuit, having won the world combined championship in 1939 and the world combined and downhill championships in 1941. Jennewein began his flight training in 1940 and upon its completion he was transferred to 4.(Eins)/JFS 5 based on the Channel Front in summer 1941. On his fourth combat mission, on 20 September 1941, he claimed his first victories over three Spitfire fighters. After claiming two further Spitfires on 15 October, Jennewein was transferred to 2./JG51 on the Eastern Front. By the end of July 1942, when he was posted to serve as a flight instructor, he had added 12 Russian aircraft to his tally. He returned to 2./JG51 before the end of the year. In a surprising sequence of multiple victories, Jennewein downed four Russian aircraft on 18 January (22-26), five on 23 February (32-36) and seven on 24 February (37-43) for which he was awarded the Ehrenpokal on 1 March 1943. He claimed his 45th victory on 10 March and received the Deutsches Kreuz in Gold on 12 April 1943. On 6 May he recorded five Il-2 Sturmovik ground-attack aircraft shot down (49-53). He claimed 23 victories in July 1943, including five on 21 July (77-81). On 27 July, after aerial combat east of Orel, Oberfeldwebel Jennewein force-landed his Fw 190 A-6 "Black 7" (W.Nr. 550 181) behind Russian lines, never being seen again. He was promoted in absentia to Leutnant and awarded the Ritterkreuz posthumously on 5 December 1943.

Josef "Pepi" Jennewein flew 271 missions in claiming 86 victories, of which five were on the Western Front and 81 on the Eastern Front, including 29 Il-2 Sturmoviks.
