By the end of September 1943, Nowotny's confirmed claims totalled 218 and in October, Nowotny's last full month in Russia, he shot down 32 Soviet aircraft, this figure including eight on 9 October and six on the 13th and 14th, bringing his total to 250 victories. The photograph of Nowotny (INSET) is believed to have been taken on 14 October when he shot down two P40s, two LaGG-3s and two La-5s, bringing his tally to 250 victories. On this occasion he was flying his Fw 190A-5 W.Nr. 410004, seen in the background and more clearly (Photo 1). Nowotny was the first pilot to reach this total and was thus the Luftwaffe's most successful fighter pilot. On 19 October he was awarded the Diamonds. Although Nowotny officially retained command of I./JG54 until 4 February 1944, he in fact left the Eastern Front some months earlier, his final victories in the East being two 11-2s which he shot down on 15 November 1943, bringing his tally to 255.

Focke-Wulf Hptm. Walter NOWOTNY, Commander of I./JG54Grünherz, Orel, Fall 1943
An Austrian, Walter Nowotny, joined JG54 in 1941. He commanded the 1st Staffel from October, 1942, and in August of 1943 was nominated to command I./JG54. He achieved 256 aerial victories on the Eastern Front, with another 20 unconfirmed. From early 1944, he commanded JG101, a training unit in France. In September, 1944, he was tasked with forming Erprobungskommando Nowotny (III./JG6), a test unit equipped with the new Me262 jet fighters. Flying an Me262, he was killed in action on November 8th, 1944. He flew 442 combat missions, and was awarded the Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves, Swords and Brilliants. Flying this aircraft, Oblt. Otto Vincent, commander of 2./JG54, went missing in action on January 4th, 1944, after combat with Il-2s. The aircraft wore an unusual upper wing camouflage, seen on some of the aircraft produced by the AGO works plant in Oschersleben.

Focke-Wulf Fw 190A-6, W.Nr. 550528, Maj. Erich Rudorffer, CO of II./JG 54, Immola, Finland, Summer, 1944
Personal aircraft of the CO of II./JG 54, Maj. Rudorffer, from the summer of 1944 carried a standard camouflage scheme consisting of RLM 74/75/76, which was significantly darkened from nose to tail, likely utilizing a spray of RLM 74. The tactical CO marking, double chevron was supplemented by a small black '1'. The bottom of the cowling comes across as quite dark in black and white photographs, and was probably red. It is quite possible that the top wing colors were mirror images of each other, much like in that of the aircraft depicted in Scheme F (Black '12', W. Nr. 550889). The crosses on the bottoms of the wings did not carry the usual black outline. The black spiral on the white spinner was a typical marking carried by aircraft of the 4. and 5. Staffel JG 54 in the summer of '44, but in the case of this aircraft, that spiral also may have been red. This aircraft was lost on December 15th, 1944 in combat with Pe-2s and Airacobras, along with its pilot, Uffz. Walter Lewe. Maj. Rudorffer, holder of the Knight's Cross with Oak Cluster and Swords, was CO of II./JG 54 from July, 1943 to the end of 1944. Among his confirmed 224 kills (according to some sources, 222), gained over the course of more than 1000 combat sorties were 58 Il-2s and nine B-17s which he overwhelmed flying the Me 262 Schwalbe as a member of Stab I./JG 7. During his career he was flamed at least sixteen times, nine of which required his use of a parachute.

Horst Ademeit
Horst Ademeit first flew during the Battle of Britain, but only achieved one victory during the battle as he mostly flew as wingman. He was transferred to the Eastern Front in 1941 where he scored his second kill. He was promoted to Leutnant in 1943, and by April 16th 1943 he had amassed 53 victories. Succeeding Nowotny as I./JG54's Gruppenkommandeur, he led the unit during the retreat from the Courland pocket. He was awarded the Oak Leaves in March 1944. On August 8th, 1944, Ademeit was leading four Fw190s on a free hunting sortie, during which they intercepted ten Il-2s and Yak-9s. After persuing an Il-2, Ademeit's plane was hit by machine-gun fire from the ground, and crashed, killing the pilot. His final score was 166, all but one scored on the Eastern Front.

Robert 'Bazzi' Weiss Hauptmann
Robert 'Bazi' Weiss was born on 21 April 1920 at Baden near Wien in Austria. In 1939, Weiss was serving with a flak regiment but then transferred to the Luftwaffe and learned to fly in 1940. On 1 January 1941, Leutnant Weiss was serving with 6./JG26 on the Channel Front. He recorded his first victory when he shot down a RAF Spitfire fighter between Etaples and Berck on 21 September. In September 1942, Weiss was transferred to JG54. He was assigned to 1./JG54 based on the Eastern Front. By March 1943 he was serving with 3./JG54. On 8 April 1943, Weiss recorded his 30th victory. He was awarded the Ehrenpokal on 8 May. Weiss fell ill in May 1943 and was withdrawn from combat until July when he was appointed Staffelkapitan of 3./JG54. On 2 August 1943, he was awarded the Deutsches Kreuz in Gold. On 11 September, Weiss had to make an emergency landing in Fw 190 A-6 (W.Nr. 530 337) following aerial combat. By the beginning of October he had 68 victories to his credit and had been appointed Staffelkapitan of 10./JG54. Oberleutnant Weiss was awarded the Ritterkreuz for 98 confirmed victories on 26 March 1944.
In May 1944, Weiss was transferred to III./JG54 engaged in Reich Defence. On 6 June the unit was transferred Villacoublay-Sud on the Invasion Front. On 6 June 1944, Weiss was appointed Gruppenkommandeur of III./JG54. Weiss added nine victories to his tally in June. Under leadership of Hauptmann Weiss, III./JG54 was the most successful fighter unit over the Invasion Front, claiming 100 Allied aircraft shot down (100th victory claimed by Feldwebel Wilhelm Muller of Stab III./JG54 on 15 August 1944) for the loss of 50 aircraft in aerial combat. By early August, Weiss was credited with 118 victories. He was the fourth most successful German ace over the Invasion Front. On 16 August, III./JG54 was ordered to withdraw for rest, replenishment and re-equipment with the surviving pilots proceeding by ground transport to Oldenburg. By 25 September, III./JG54 had re-equipped with the Fw 190 D-9, becoming the first operational Gruppe of the Luftwaffe to receive the new type. On 28 September "Bazzi" shot down a Spitfire reconnaissance aircraft of the RAF's 541 Squadron. The first confirmed victory of the Fw 190D-9. On 29 December 1944, III./JG54 were ordered up against British fighter-bombers in the Osnabruck, Munster and Rheine areas. Weiss led Stab III JG54 and 11./JG54 into a large formation of Spitfires from 331 and 501 Squadrons. During the subsequent aerial combat Typhoons from 168 and 438 Squadrons arrived to re-enforce the British fighters. None of Weiss's Schwarm returned. In the blackest day of JG54 "Grunherz" history, 17 aircraft were lost and 13 pilots, including Weiss, were killed and two pilots were injured while claiming six RAF fighters. It is assumed that Weiss was shot down in Fw 190 D-9 (W.Nr. 210 060) "Black 10" by F/Sgt Haanes of 331 (Norwegian) Squadron, RAF. During this engagement he achieved one further victory that due to lack of witnesses was credited to a nearby Flak unit. He was posthumously awarded the Eichenlaub (Nr. 782) on 12 March 1945.

Walter 'Nowi' Nowotny
Walter “Nowi” Nowotny was born on 7 December 1920 at Ceske Velenice/Gmünd on the Czechoslovakian/Austrian border. He joined the Luftwaffe on 1 October 1939. His flying training was completed at Jagfliegerschule 5 at Schwechat, near Vienna. Nowotny was posted to JG54 on 23 February 1941. Leutnant Nowotny was assigned to 9./JG54. His first four weeks with the unit were served with the Stabsschwarm of Ergänzungsgruppe/JG54. He claimed his first victories over Ösel Island on 19 July, when he shot down two Russian I-153 biplane fighters. However, he was, in turn, shot down in Bf-109E-7 (W.Nr. 1137) “White 2” by an I-153, flown by the future Russian ace Alexandr Avdeev (13 victories, killed in action 12 August 1942) of 153 IAP, VVS, over Riga Bay in this engagement. After three days and nights at sea in a rubber dinghy, Nowotny finally reached the shore. He recorded his 10th victory on 13 September.
On 11march 1942, Nowotny transferred to 3./JG54. He shot down five Russian fighters on 20 July. On 2 August 1942, Nowotny claimed seven enemy aircraft shot down to record his 48th through 54th victories. On 11 August, he shot down two RussianmiG-3 fighters. His Bf109G-2 (W.Nr. 10360) was hit in the engagement and caught fire. Nowotny was able to bring the burning aircraft back to his base for a crash-landing, although he did suffer some injuries. Leutnant Nowotny was awarded the Ritterkreuz on 4 September for 56 victories. Nowotny, was appointed Staffelkapitän of 1./JG54 on 25 October 1942. He recorded his 75th victory on 20march 1943. On 26march 1943, Nowotnymet the first Russian flown Spitfire fighters, operated by the 26 GvIAP of the Leningrad Air Defence, and shot down one of them for his 79th victory. In June, he shot down 41 enemy aircraft, including five on 1 June (84-88), six on 8 June (93-98), his 100th victory on 15 June, six on 21 June (109-114) and 10 on 24 June (115-124). On 10 August 1943, Nowotny was appointed Gruppenkommandeur of I./JG54. He recorded 49 Soviet planes shot down in August 1943, including nine on 13 August (129–137), six on 18 August (146-151) and seven on the 21 August (155-161).
His prolific scoring continued in September when he shot down 45 enemy aircraft during themonth. On 1 September 1943, he shot down ten enemy aircraft (174-183); five in the space of 12minutes during amorning sortie and another five in nineminutes at noon. He shot down six enemy aircraft the next day (184-189). On 4 September, Oberleutnant Nowotny was awarded the Eichenlaub (Nr 293) for 189 victories. He shot down five enemy aircraft on 8 September, including his 200th victory. On 14 and 15 September, he claimed six enemy aircraft on each day to raise his victory total to 215. Hauptmann Nowotny was awarded the Schwertern (Nr 37) on 22 September for 218 victories. During his last ten days on the Eastern Front, ending on 14 October 1943, Nowotny shot down 32 Russian aircraft, including eight on 9 October (224-231) and six on 13 (239-244) and 14 October (245-250). Nowotny was the first pilot in history to pass 250 victories and was now the top-scoring fighter ace of the Luftwaffe. On 19 October, he became the eighth recipient of the Brillanten. The Nazi propagandamachine turned Nowotny into a “superstar” of the Luftwaffe. He had received the highestmilitary awards available: Ritterkreuzmit Eichenlaub, Schwertern und Brillanten and was withdrawn from combat activity by the High Command. During the followingmonths, hismain role was to perform propaganda andmoral-boosting duties before, on 1 April 1944, Hauptmann Nowotny was appointed Kommodore of JG101, an operational fighter-training unit, based at Pau in France.
In September 1944,major Nowotny was put in charge of Kommando Nowotny, equipped with theme 262 jet fighter. The unit consolidated a number of test units and was tasked with acquiring tactical knowledge and experience ofme 262 operations. The unit was based on two airfields northwest of Osnabrück: Achmer and Hesepe. Nowotny was besieged with difficulties in operationally testing the jet fighter. In addition to staving off the increasing Allied fighter presence the jets attracted, he was also beset with the technical difficulties a new and immature technology presented. By 7 November 1944, Nowotny had claimed three victories in the new jet fighter. Nowotny took off on 8 November 1944, flying against USAAF bombers with a fighter escort. The exact circumstances of Nowotny’s death remain uncertain. Ground personnel reported hearing combat above the clouds. Nowotny reported he had downed a B-24 four-engine bomber and probably destroyed a P-51 fighter. He then reported an engine failure beforemaking a garbled transmission referring to “burning” over the radio. Hisme 262A-1a (W.Nr. 110400) “White 8” was seen to dive vertically out of the clouds and crash at Epe, 2.5 kilometres east of Hesepe. It is generally accepted that he was shot down by 1st Lt Edward “Buddy” Haydon of the 357th Fighter Group, USAAF and Capt Ernest “Feeb” Fiebelkorn (9 victories) of the 20th Fighter Group, USAAF whom shared ame 262 victory at 12:45 over Achmer that day.
Walter Nowotny flew over 442missions in achieving 258 victories. He recorded 255 of his victories over the Eastern front. Of his three victories recorded over the Western front, 2 were four-engine bombers and all 3 victories were gained while flying theme 262 jet fighter. He claimed 24 victories over Il-2.

Erich Rudorffer
Erich Rudorffer was born on 1 November 1917 at Zwochau, near Leipzig, in Saxony. Rudorffer was posted to JG2 on 1 November 1939. Feldwebel Rudorffer was assigned to 2./JG2. He recorded his first victory, a French Curtiss Hawk 75 fighter, on 14 May 1940. He went on to score eight additional victories during the Battle of France. By 1 May 1941, Leutnant Rudorffer had achieved 19 victories, which led to the award of the Ritterkreuz. During the British "Non-Stop Offensive" of 1941, Rudorffer recorded 21 victories, including his 40th on 8 December. Rudorffer was particularly successful over the Allied landings at Dieppe on 19 August 1942 when he shot down two Spitfire fighters, his 44th and 45th victory. On 11 November, Rudorffer was appointed Staffelkapitan of 6./JG2. He led the unit when II./JG2 was transferred to Tunisia. He shot down eight British aircraft in 32 minutes on 9 February 1943 to record his 54th through 61st victories, and seven more in 20 minutes six days later (63-69). Following the hospitalisation of Hauptmann Adolf Dickfeld (136 victories, RK-EL) with injuries received in a landing accident, Oberleutnant Rudorffer assumed temporary command of II./JG2. After scoring a total of 27 victories in Tunisia, Rudorffer returned to the Channel Front in April 1943. In May 1943, Hauptmann Rudorffer was appointed Gruppenkommandeur of II./JG2. He recorded two further victories, his 73rd and 74th, before parting company with JG2.
Rudorffer was given the task of forming IV./JG54 near Konigsberg in June 1943. However, Rudorffer was transferred to the Eastern Front to assume command of II./JG54 after its Kommandeur, Hauptmann Heinrich Jung (68 victories, RK) failed to return from a mission on 30 July 1943. Once on the Eastern Front, Rudorffer's really successful days again.
On 24 August 1943, he shot down five Russian aircraft on the first mission of the day and followed that up with three more victories on a second mission. On 14 September he claimed five victories (91-95). He scored seven victories in seven minutes on 11 October, including his 100th, but his finest achievement occurred on 6 November when in the course of 17 minutes, 13 Russian aircraft fell to his guns! Only another Grunherzflieger, Emil "Bully" Lang (173 victories, RK-EL, killed in action 3 September 1944) and Hans-Joachim Marseille (158 victories, RK-Br, killed in action 30 September 1942) were to rival Rudorffer's feat.
On 7 April 1944, Rudorffer shot down six enemy aircraft 129-134). Major Rudorffer was awarded the Eichenlaub (Nr 447) on 11 April 1944 for 134 victories. Following a spell of leave, Rudorffer returned to combat duty to claim five victories on 3 July, six on 26 July, including his 150th victory, five on 25 August (168-172), six on 25 September (182-187), seven on 10 October (188-194) and 11 on 28 October. For his exploits, he received the Schwertern (Nr 126) for his 212th victory on 26 January 1945. On 15 January 1945, Major Rudorffer was placed in command of the Me262 jet fighter equipped I./JG7. He became one of the first jet fighter aces in the world by scoring 12 victories, including 10 four-engined bombers, in the jet. Erich Rudorffer survived the war and continued his aviation career as a member of the Bundesluftwaffe.
Erich Rudorffer scored a total of 224 victories, placing him 7th on the all time list. This score did not come without a cost: Rudorffer flew over 1,000 missions, entering combat on 302 occasions, was shot down 16 times, and baled out 9 times! Of note are the 58 Il-2 Sturmoviks included in his 138 Eastern Front victories (all while flying the Fw 190) and the 10 four-engined bombers shot down in Reichsverteidigung missions.

I arrive at the airfield at 02:30 while stars still shine in the dark skies. As a result of the cool night, dew covers the clover underfoot and my fur-lined flying boots are damp. The airfield is alive with activity.
In the parking. places, 45 engines are being warmed-up and create a monotonous roar as the chief mechanics rev them up. Bright, blue-yellow flames shoot from the exhaust stubs and the air is filled with a rare scent from the mixture of soil, flowers, grass, petrol and oi1.As the eastern skies are tinged with colour, there is the first chirping of birds and the shadows and darkness quickly disappear. Everyone on the airfield is aware that this is the dawn of a fateful day.
Shivering, we climb into our aircraft. The metal seat is cold and the harness is damp. The chief mechanic straps me in and wishes me luck as I close the canopy. The engine starts with a thunder. As always before a combat mission, my throat is dry and perhaps my heart is beating faster than normally. At 02.50 hrs we take off. The order is for all Geschwader of the I. Fliegerk01ps to cross the border at 03.00 and as we fly over it, the front comes alive. At 03.05, heavy artillery is brought into action and everywhere, all along the front, we see the muzzle flashes of the guns. It is a rousing scene, and at this moment the Eastern Front is born. From our vantage point we can see to the north across the Memel River, while to the south the Romintener Heath is visible. We all feel that a powerful drama is unfolding, that a door is being opened on a new phase of history, but one which will possibly be fateful for us all.
We fly in the direction of Kowno. The pilots fly nervously. I recognize this from the first operations of previous campaigns. It is due to anxiety, as so much is unknown: What will the Russians do? Will our surprise attack succeed? Will the Russian fighters engage in combat? Are their aircraft superior to ours? Before and below us on the dark ground is the city and airfield of Kowno, which can be identified only through its outline and contours. At this moment the sun rises above the eastern horizon, suddenly bringing glittering rays of light on our aircraft as we fly through the crystal-clear air of the dawn of a new day.
Our bombers attack the airfield at Kowno, the bombs landing in the middle of the parked aircraft. Suddenly, there are two fighters in front of us, but they disappear as quickly as they had appeared. There is no combat with them. We fly back. Numerous fires blaze along the entire front and thick black columns of smoke rise high in the sky.
The Russians wtre not prepared in any way for the first, surprise attack and most of their bases are attacked without any resistance. Soon, however, this situation changes and our bases at Gerlinden and Lindental report that they have spotted enemy bombers flying overhead. The alert squadrons take off to prevent the penetration of East Prussian airspace and, of the 26 SB 2 bombers which enter the area, 17 are shot down. Everywhere we see parachutes and burning, crashing aircraft. The other enemy aircraft flee in a wild panic but are followed all the way to Schaulen. We fly operations throughout the day, each pilot flying five to seven sorties. Our spines and backs ache. Escort for bombers, fighter sweeps, and low-level attacks are alternated. This afternoon we gained air superiority over our area. No Russian fighter dares to appear.
During a fighter sweep late that afternoon, we carry out a surprise attack on an enemy bomber formation which consists of 50-60 SB 2s. Unfortunately, because we are short of fuel we can only make two attacks. The first one is unsuccessful, but during the second, the right engine of the bomber in front of us is burning. The aircraft jettisons its bomb load but then explodes in the air. As we turn away, we encounter strong return fire from the tailgunners in the other bombers. The enemy formation flies south, but our fuel shortage compels us to return to base. We radio for reinforcements which intercept this formation and shoot down another 11 aircraft. One of our Me 109s has been hit and is unable to lower its landing gear. The pilot makes a careful and successful crash-landing. One hour later we take off for our next mission. One pilot loses his bearings during air combat but reports from Litzmannstadt in the late afternoon.
Toward dusk we fly one last mission in the direction of Schaulen but there is no contact with the enemy. We fly low over our ground troops who are half way to Kowno and Schaulen. Dense clouds of dust reveal the direction of the advance of each column, just as in Poland. There are fires everywhere; entire villages are in flames. Tauroggen is burning and produces a large column of black smoke which can be seen from far away. After the final mission, the successes of the day are reported to the Fliegerkorps. The Geschwader destroyed 45 aircraft in the air and 35 on the ground.
The strain of the day's fighting is very noticeable. We are all dog-tired and need rest, but this is a bad time for fighter pilots to sleep and we are unable to relax until the middle of the night. After just two hours, however, we have to prepare for the next day's operations.Pilots JG54 pilot Hannes Trautloft
'...there was no throttle!'HANNTRAUTLOFT, KOMMODORE OF JG54
During the Balkans campaign, the 'Green Hearts' Geschwader, then stationed at Belgrade-Semlin, was withdrawn from combat operations. Before our aircraft were passed on to another unit, the ground personnel did their best to bring them up to first-class condition and parked them around the edge of the airfield. Until they took delivery of new aircraft, the 'Green Hearts' therefore led a peaceful existence and each person used his free time in his own way. For the pilots, this involved some high-performance Yugoslav gliders which they had found in a hangar and had made ready to f1y.Thus, every Friday, while the war raged elsewhere, such famous glider pilots as Wolfgang Spate, Franz Eckerle, and 'Hubs' Miltherich performed their masterly aerobatics displays over the Semlin air base. These so impressed me that I decided I wanted to take part so, one Friday, 'Hubs' Miltherich gave me the necessary instruction, a Go-145 tow-plane was coupled up to the glider, and off I went.
At first everything proceeded smoothly. Then, at a height of 1, 000 metres, as I banked the glider into a turn, I saw below me a Do-17 which had carried out an emergency landing in one of the tributaries of. the River Danube which ran close to the airfield. Fascinated, and purely out of habit, I rolled the glider upside down to take a better look at the crash-landed Dornier. This cost me a considerable loss in height, but 1 was so engrossed that it was only as I automatically reached for the throttle that I realised that I, the experienced fighter pilot, was not seated in my Bf-109 and that there was no throttle!
Struggling to return to the airfield in a shallow glide, I saw before me, as if forming a barrier, the proud lines of Bf109s which the ground personnel had so carefully serviced. The whole Geschwader was watching and a collision seemed inevitable, but I pushed the stick forward and hoped for the best. The nose dropped and the glider picked up a little speed, but I was still heading straight towards the parked Bf109s. I hauled back on the stick and the glider staggered to a height of three metres, rose over the parked aircraft - and stalled.
The glider fell like a stone. There was a loud crash as it broke apart, losing its canopy and wings. I sat in the wreckage surprised but uninjured until one of the workshop foremen arrived and, anxious to be helpful, set about freeing me from the smashed remains. However, he clearly had not recognised me as the Geschwader Kommodore, for as he pulled away the splintered wood and torn fabric, I heard him dryly remark, 'I should have known! Bloody Friday again!'
Hannes Trautloft was born on 3 March 1912 at Gro?-Obringen near Weimar in Thuringen. On 1 April 1931 he joined the Deutsche Verkehrfliegerschule at Schlei?heim and learned to fly. In 1932 he spent four months at the secret training base in Lipezk, Russia. He returned to Germany to serve in the army until 1934 when he was transferred to Jagdfliegerschule Schlei?heim as a Leutnant.
Trautloft was one of six pilots that sailed aboard the Ursaramo arriving at Cadiz, Spain on 7 August 1936 to support Franco's Nationalists in the Spanish Civil War. Initially flying He 51 biplane fighters Trautloft and Kraft Eberhardt (seven victories, killed in action 13 November 1936) recorded the first German victories in Spain by each claiming a Breguet XIX shot down on 25 August 1936. On 30 August, Trautloft claimed a Potez 540 for his second victory but became the first German pilot shot down over Spain. He baled out and landed near Nationalist forces and returned unharmed. In December 1936, four prototype Bf-109s were delivered to counter the Russian SB twin-engine bombers and the I-15 and I-16 fighters supporting the Spanish Republican forces. Trautloft went on to record three more confirmed victories flying the Bf-109 for a total of five victories in Spain. Perhaps more importantly, Trautloft was responsible for developing tactics for the deployment of the Bf109 in service. He was awarded the Spanienkreuz in Gold mit Schwertern for his service in Spain. On his return to Germany, Trautloft served with different units, including winning the international roundthe-alps air race in Switzerland as part of the "Dreier-Patrouille" flying Bf-109s, before being appointed Staffelkapitan of 12./JG132 on 1 July 1938. 12./JG132 was redesignated 2./JG331 on 1 November 1938. At the outbreak of World War 2, Trautloft was serving with 2./JG77.
He participated in the Polish campaign. He gained his first victory in the new conflict when he shot down a Polish PZL P.23 attack aircraft near Warta. Trautloft was promoted to the rank of Hauptmann and became Gruppenkommandeur of I./JG20 on 19 September 1939. He gained two victories with the unit during the French campaign. I./JG20 was to be redesignated III./JG51 on 4 July 1940. The Battle of Britain saw Trautloft record two further victories to raise his victory total to five in World War 2 and 10 overall. On 25 August 1940, Trautloft was appointed Kommodore of the newly formed JG54, a post he would hold until July 5, 1943. He led the Jagdgeschwader during the remainder of the Battle of Britain. Trautloft flew 120 missions over the Channel before JG54 was relocated to Germany for rest and refit. He recorded three further victories over England to raise his overall victory total to 13.
Trautloft and JG54 participated in the Balkans campaign and Operation Barbarossa, the invasion of Russia. Major Trautloft was awarded the Ritterkreuz on 27 July 1941 for achieving 20 victories and outstanding leadership. By the end of 1941 he had recorded 26 victories. He recorded 19 victories in 1942, including his 30th victory on 16 March, his 40th on 9 May and his 50th on 15 February 1943. On 6 July 1943, Trautloft was appointed Inspizient Ost with the General der Jagflieger's office. He was appointed Inspekteur der Tagjager on 27 November. Trautloft's involvement in the so-called "Mutiny of the Fighter Pilots" in 1945 led to his removal and subsequent posting to 4 Flieger-SchulDivision based at Strassburg. He ended the war with this unit based at Doberitz-Elsgrund. Post-war, Trautloft joined the Bundesluftwaffe on 1 October 1957 with the rank of Brigadegeneral. During the 1960's, Trautloft served as the Inspector General of the Bundesluftwaffe. He retired on 30 June 1970 with the rank of Generalleutnant. Trautloft was active in many veterans' organizations until his death on 11 January 1995 at Bad Wiessee near Munchen.
Hannes Trautloft was credited with 58 victories in 560 missions. He recorded 45 victories over the Eastern front. Included in his total are five victories recorded during the Spanish Civil War.

Quite simply, Hannes Trautloft is the father of the Grunherzgeschwader. Many historians consider Trautloft as one of the Luftwaffe's most effective leaders and should be mentioned in the same breath with Molders, Galland and Lutzow.
Trautloft was born March 3, 1912 in Grossobringen in the Thuringen area of Germany.
In April 1932, he entered the Deutsche Verkehrfliegerschule - German Air Transport School and a few months later was sent to the secret training base in Lipezk, Russia. Lipezk is located 310 miles south-east of Moscow and is the result of an agreement between Germany and Russia. In exchange for technical assistance to the new and developing Russian Air Force, the Germans were allowed a clandestine flight school and test centre. The secrecy surrounding the Lipezk centre was necessary given that Germany was forbidden, by the Treaty of Versailles, to develop a miliary air arm.
When Germany decided to secretly aid to General Franco of Nationalist Spain, Hannes Trautloft was one of six pilots aboard the Ursaramo. The pilots arrived at Cadiz, Spain on August 7, 1936. Also onboard were six crated He-51 biplane fighters. After the Spanish pilots had difficulty with the biplane, the German pilots soon took over the flying duties.
Trautloft and Kraft Eberhardt scored the first German victories in Spain by each claiming a Breguet XIX on August 25, 1936. Then on August 30, he claimed a Potez 540 for his second victory. Unfortunately, during this combat Trautloft became the first German pilot shot down over Spain. Lucikly, he parachuted near Nationalist forces and returned unharmed
The Soviet Union became active in supporting the Spanish Republican forces by sending SB bombers and the quick and agile I-15 and I-16 fighters. The He-51 could not match the new opponents in the air and the cry soon went out for better fighters to be sent to Spain. Eventually, four prototype Bf-109s were delivered in December 1936. Trautloft was one of the first pilots to test fly the new monowing fighter from Messerschmitt. Wanting to show some individuality, Trautloft had the green heart emblem of his homeland, Thuringen, applied to the V3 prototype.
The young Trautloft went on to score three more confirmed victories (Nieuport 52, Potez 540 and I-16) for a total of five in Spain.
During the Polish campaign, Trautloft was Staffelkaptain of 2./JG77. He was subsequently promoted to Hauptmann and became Gruppenkommanduere of III./JG51 on September 19, 1939.
The fates of Hannes Trautloft and JG54 converged in August of 1940. Late in August, it became apparent that Adler Tag, 'Eagle Day', had failed to win the air superiority promised by Reichsmarschall Hermann Goering. Ever ready to deflect the blame from his failed strategy, the Reichmarschall pointed to his fighter pilots' lack of aggressiveness. Several of the older Kommodoren were replaced by younger, more 'aggressive' types. JG26 was blessed with Adolf Galland at its new Kommodore. JG54 also experienced good fortune with the arrival of its new Kommodore, Hannes Trautloft on August 25, 1940, a post he would hold until July 5, 1943.
Under the leadership of its new Kommodore, JG54 became one of two Jagdgeschwader most requested by bomber crews for escort duties during the remainder of the Battle of Britain; the other being Adolf Galland's JG26.
Hannes Trautloft himself flew over the Channel no less than 120 times before JG54 was rotated to the rear for rest and refit.
Along with all but two Jagdgeschwader, Trautloft and JG54 participated in Operation Barbarossa, the invasion of Russia. He was awarded the Ritterkreuz, Knights Cross, on June 27, 1941, for achieving 20 victories and outstanding leadership.
On December 4, 1941, Trautloft made the decision that all geschwader aircraft had to wear the 'green heart' emblem. He decided on a green heart with a narrow white outline. First seen in Spain, this badge was a tribute to Thuringen, 'the Green Heart of Germany', where Trautloft had spent his childhood. Henceforth, JG54 became known as the Geschwader Trautloft and would win immortality on the steppes of Russia.
Trautloft went on to score 25 more victories, until he was designated Jagdflieger Inspektor Ost - Inspector of Fighers East. The honor was tainted by the sad realization that the man who welded JG54 into the fighting unit it had become was leaving.
Trautloft's involvement in the Mutiny of Fighters in 1945 led to his removal as Inspector of Fighters and subsequent posting to 4 Fliegerschule Division, which he held until war's end. During the 1960's, Trautloft served as the Inspector General of the reborn German Air Force. In addition, he was active in many verterans organization until his passing in 1995.
In all, Hannes Trautloft flew 560 combat missions, scoring 57 victories, 45 of them in the east.

At 12:06 hours on 16 February 1945 four FW 190 A-8s led by Oberleutnant Otto Kittel of 2./J.G.54 took off from an airbase in the Kurland pocket. The mission was free hunting over the frontline area near Dzukste. This was Kittel's 583rd combat sortie. After only seven minutes the German fighters spotted fourteen Il-2s that were bombing and shooting rockets at German ground troops from an altitude of 150 metres. Oberleutnant Kittel radioed an attack order. The Il-2 Shturmoviks were flying in a row, one after another, and Kittel attacked from the right hand side. His wingman Oberfahnrich Renner wrote:
"Flying at a distance of about 100 metres from Oblt. Kittel I saw him dive beneath and behind an Il-2 and attack it. Behind us two other Il-2s pulled up sharply. In the next moment an explosion was seen in his cockpit and the aircraft started to descend".
Kittel's FW 190 tore into the ground with its starboard wing, caught fire, and then exploded. Otto Kittel, victor in 267 aerial combats and the highest scoring fighter pilot to fall prey to an enemy, had no chance whatsoever of surviving. He was buried in Sabile/Lithuania. Otto Kittel was the top FW 190 ace of the war, followed closely by another member of the Grunherz Geschwader, Walter Nowotny. In the middle of October 1944, about 500,000 soldiers -- 32 German divisions and the 20,000 men of the Latvian Nineteenth Division of the Waffen-SS -- were cut off from the rest of the German army and encircled. To the east and the south was the Soviet army, to the north and the west -- the Baltic Sea. The Latvians called it Kurzemes katls, the Kurland kettle; the Germans called it Festung Kurland, Fortress Kurland.
For the Nineteenth Division Kurland was truly the last stand. They took part in six major battles between October 12, 1944, and April 3, 1945. Together with the German army units they on the whole held the front line, keeping the Bolsheviks out of Kurland, until May 8, 1945, when Germany capitulated. These soldiers remained undefeated until the final moments of the war, im Felde unbesiegt, as the Germans say. In one of the last battles, Captain Miervaldis Adamsons' company in a single 24-hour period repelled seven attacks by the Russians, and after the battle the bodies of 400 fallen Soviet soldiers could be counted in front of the Latvians' unconquered positions.
The Soviet High Command asked the commanders of the First and Second Baltic Fronts to take forceful action in Kurland, in order to drive the enemy from the northern sector of the Baltic Sea and free their units for more important positions on the Soviet-German front. The first attempt occurred on October 16, 1944, but was stopped in the area around Tukums. The next Soviet offensive took place on October 27, but met with strong resistance from the outset and did not result in any gains. November 20 saw another offensive, but the Germans and Latvians stabilized their defensive line, utilizing favorable geographic features. Equally unsuccessful were the final attempts of the First and Second Baltic Front Armies to liquidate the German Army Group "Kurland" in December of 1944 and February and April of 1945.
Soviet documents show that Stalin threw division after division into the Kurland inferno, disregarding the appallingly high losses. According to German estimates , the Soviet army lost 320,000 soldiers -- including those fallen, wounded, and taken prisoner -- and 2388 tanks, 659 planes, 900 cannons, and 1440 machine-guns.This information is Gryler,A.N. et al "Boevoi Sostav Sovetskoi Armii IV"(Combat Composition of the Soviet Army) 281-282.

Kurland: The Last Stand
In the middle of October 1944, about 500,000 soldiers -- 32 German divisions and the 20,000 men of the Latvian Nineteenth Division of the Waffen-SS -- were cut off from the rest of the German army and encircled. To the east and the south was the Soviet army, to the north and the west -- the Baltic Sea. The Latvians called itKurzemes katls, the Kurland kettle; the Germans called itFestungKurland, Fortress Kurland.
The Latvians trapped in Kurland were in a tragic situation. Besides the soldiers, there were also about 500,000 local inhabitants and civilian refugees from Riga and Vidzeme, altogether about a million people encircled by the Bolsheviks. Food and other supplies were scarce, and winter was approaching. Civilians and soldiers, both Latvian and German, understood that Hitler was defeated, that the Nazi Reich would soon collapse, and nothing good could be expected from the Bolsheviks.
For the Nineteenth Division Kurland was truly the last stand. They took part in six major battles between October 12, 1944, and April 3, 1945. Together with the German army units they on the whole held the front line, keeping the Bolsheviks out of Kurland, until May 8, 1945, whenGermany capitulated. These soldiers remained undefeated until the final moments of the war,im Felde unbesiegt, as the Germans say. In one of the last battles, Captain Miervaldis Adamsons' company in a single 24-hour period repelled seven attacks by the Russians, and after the battle the bodies of 400 fallen Soviet soldiers could be counted in front of the Latvians' unconquered positions.
Soviet war historians have also written about the stubborn resistance put up by the defenders of Fortress Kurland, especially by the Latvians. Using these Soviet sources, Gershon Shapiro, a veteran of the Soviet-German war who emigrated to Israel, writes in his document collectionJews -- Heroes of the Soviet Union(in Russian, Tel Aviv 1982, pp. 359-360) that the Soviet High Command asked the commanders of the First and Second Baltic Fronts to take forceful action in Kurland, in order to drive the enemy from the northern sector of the Baltic Sea and free their units for more important positions on the Soviet-German front. The first attempt occurred on October 16, 1944, but was stopped in the area around Tukums. The next Soviet offensive took place on October27, but met with strong resistance from the outset and did not result in any gains.
According to German estimates, the Soviet army lost 320,000 soldiers -- including those fallen, wounded, and taken prisoner -- and 2388 tanks, 659 planes, 900 cannons, and 1440 machine-guns.
When the 33 divisions (32 German and one Latvian) were forced to capitulate on May 8, 1945, some of the Latvian legionnaires refused to submit as prisoners of war and fled into the forest of Kurland, to continue fighting the Bolsheviks as partisans, or guerrillas. Knowing what dismal fate awaited them, they decided to fight until their bullets ran out, or until the international situation changed. There were those who hoped that the United States and England would finally see thesituation clearly and would turn against Stalin. The Latvian national partisans, like those in Estonia, Lithuania, and the Ukraine, continued armed resistance in complete isolation until 1952, when Bolshevik "punitive expeditions" liquidated the last of the "forest brothers," as they were called.
A few years later, around 1954, the US military command sought to compile a list of Latvian soldiers in exile who would be ready to parachute into Latvia, in case World War III were to start (newspaper Laiks, May 8, 1985). The British went further and trained Latvian soldiers, who then parachuted into Russian-occupied Latvia. Unfortunately, as was later disclosed in spy trials in England, these plans had reached Soviet intelligence in advance, and the parachutists were met at the drop locations by KGB agents.
By then it was too late to do anything for free Latvia. However, there had been time, there had been chances earlier to save Latvia from Soviet imperialism. But just as Hitler sold the Baltic states to Stalin in 1939, so Franklin D. Roosevelt and Winston Churchill did exactly the same in 1943, 1944, and 1945, finally completely capitulating to Stalin at the Yalta Conference. As a Jew, I have to add that this was the same Roosevelt who did not raise a finger to provide asylum to Jewish refugees from Germany, Austria, and Czechoslovakia, and who refused to order the bombing of Auschwitz and the railroad lines leading to it to paralyze the gas chambers and crematoria. This was the same Churchill who did not allow Jewish refugees into Palestine, and who delayed for years sending the Eretz Israel Jewish brigade to the front to fight against the Germans.

But let us return to the Latvians. Latvians also took part in World War II on the Western, democratic side. The Latvian ambassador in Washington, Alfreds Bilmanis, reached an agreement with US authorities turning Latvian merchant ships, which were not under communist control, over to the Western Allies. As reported inThe New York Times, independent Latvia's merchant fleet played a significant role in war transports. More than half of these ships were torpedoed in the Atlantic within a year by German submarines.
Within Latvia itself, then occupied by German troops, were people who did not recognize the right of either the Nazis or the Bolsheviks to rule the country. They put their hopes in the United States and England, expecting that after the war the Western Allies would help Latvia regain its independence.
In the spring of 1943 the Latvian ambassador in Stockholm, Voldemars Salnais, sent a secret memorandum to Riga, which was received by Verners Tepfers, a general in the prewar Latvian army. On August 13 of that year, Konstantins Cakste, the son of Latvia's first president Janis Cakste, called together an illegal meeting to form the Latvian Central Council --Latvijas CentralaPadome, LCP. Cakste was elected the first chairman of the LCP, which included representatives of the Latvian Social Democratic Party, the Democratic Center, the Christian Farmers' Union of Latgale, and the Latvian Farmers' Union. It included such prominent figures as Dr. Pauls Kalnins and his son Bruno Kalnins, J. Rancans, J. Breikss, V. Bastjanis, F. Cielens, A. Klive, L. Seja, andothers.
The purpose of the LCP was to work for the re-establishment of the Latvian state, an independent, democratic Latvia, which would form friendly relations with the United States, England, and the Scandinavian countries, and promote the formation of a confederation of Baltic states. The LCP established contact with similar democratic organizations in neighboring lands, the Lithuanian Supreme Liberation Council and the Estonian Resistance Movement. With the knowledge andtacit approval of Colonel Janums of the Latvian Legion, the LCP actively worked with General Kurelis, whose group had continuous contact with the LCP through Captain Upelnieks. General Kurelis headed a group of armed men, a sort of Home Guard that had been formed with the initial approval of the Germans.
Unfortunately the Gestapo found out about these activities, arrested many of the leaders of LCP, surrounded a large part of the Kurelis group, and ordered them to surrender their arms. Konstantins Cakste died in the Stutthof concentration camp in 1944. Most of Kurelis' officers -- Captain Upelnieks, Colonel Liepins, Captain Mucenieks, First Lieutenant Gregors, and others -- were shot on November 20, 1944, in Liepaja, after a German court martial. General Kurelis himself wasgranted amnesty, but about 500 of his men were sent to the Stutthof concentration camp.
Lieutenant Rubenis' battalion, which included two heavy armor companies, one machine-gun company, and one riflemen's company with about 400 men, refused to surrender its arms and fought the Germans surrounding it for 25 days. Forty men lost their lives, including the commanding officer, Lieutenant Rubenis. The Germans also suffered heavy losses. On December10 these Latvian soldiers broke up into small groups and dispersed into the forest (O. Freivalds,Kurzemes cietoksnis, Part 2, p. 75).
So ended the attempt to find a "third way" between the Nazis and the Bolsheviks.
And what was being done by the Western Allies?
Mr. Eden cannot incur the danger of antagonizing Stalin, and the British War Cabinet has consequently determined that they would agree to negotiate a treaty with Stalin which will recognize the 1940 frontiers of the Soviet Union.... He was fully aware, the President said
[Roosevelt at the Teheran Conference, November 1943], that the three Baltic Republics had belonged to Russia in the past and had once again been incorporated into the Soviet Union in 1940. He did not, he added with a smile, intend to go to war with the Soviet Union when the Red Army reoccupied these areas (W. Averell Harriman and Ellie Abel,Special Envoy to Churchill and Stalin, 1941-1946,New York 1975, pp. 135, 278-279).
The opinion of the Latvians, Lithuanians, and Estonians evidently was of no interest to the Big Three.
