Focke-Wulf Fw 190D-9 JG6 Chevron Dot Bar WNr. 211934 technical officer Germany 1945
This Fw 190 D-9 JG6 Chevron Dot Bar WNr 211934 used by technical officers of JG6. Aircraft was found at Furth, Germany on 8th May 1945.
Fw 190D-9 II Gruppe Stab Mech W.Nr.211934
This aircraft was the last of three aircraft to land at Furth. Another Mimetall produced aircraft and probably in the best of condition was painted in RLM 81/82/76 sporting an unusual grey painted section on the right top wing. Perhaps RLM 77.
Observations and Repairs
This aircraft had several repairs, being refurbished horizontal stabs that were partially painted in RLM02,the rest left bare metal as well as two painted patches on both fuselage sides that were most likely a coverup for previous numbers that had been applied.Underwinga and fuselage were painted RLM blue with the exception of the Ailrons which were left unpainted.
In closing, all four aircraft were disassembled and dumped on trash heaps within a week of surrendering.

Focke-Wulf Fw 190D-9 2./JG6 Black 1 Werk Nr unknown Plauen, Germany late 1945
Fw 190D-9 2./JG6 (B1+) Werk Nr unknown Plauen, Germany late 1945 W.Nr. 500 series Fw 190 D9 surrendered to American forces in May of 1945 at Plauen, Germany. This aircraft was produced by the Mimetall Erfurt facility as denoted by it's 3 piece MG 131 cowling (please note the bulges and flairs on the cowling typical of aircraft produced at that facility). It's actual W. Nr. is not know at this time, as it had been repainted / repaired / remarked several times. It's reasonable to assume this aircraft belonged to I./JG 6, as it is lacking a II Gruppe bar. Uppersurfaces: RLM 82/83; with RLM 81 misted on the spine. No black exhaust panel. Upper wings are painted RLM 83/75. Light green (sometimes called RLM 76a or Blaugun) covers the aft portion of the wings. RLM 76 was used on the ailerons. Leading edge on the lower wings were painted RLM 75.

Focke-Wulf Fw 190D9 II./JG6 Black 8 Bar Galle, Germany spring 1945
Fw 190D-9 Black 4 W.Nr.211939 was the second of the three Doras that surrendered to the US 10th Photo Reconnaissance Group at Furth on May 8th 1945. This aircraft had sustained 25% damage on landing on February 26th but had been returned to operational status.Like other JG6 Doras Black 4 also showed the strain and wear from it's operational environment. This aircraft belonged to II Gruppe and wore all black markings without white borders that were a peculiarity of the Gruppes 6th Staffel II/JG6.
Observations and Repairs
.This Dora was another re engined aircraft still showing the factory painted demarcation line.
.This aircraft has seen the replacement of the original side compartment access door on the left fuselage with a new still unpainted one.
.The rear extended fuselage section is unpainted as well.Camouflage
The aircraft is finished in a RLM 82/81/and 83 paint over a RLM 76 finished fuselage with a light mottle of RLM 83 on the fuselage sides. Once again the Top wing Camo is the Offensive RLM76 in combination with RLM82.The underwing has been left unpainted as was the fuselage other than the nose section and the Ailerons. The main gear doors are of the wooden type and are painted RLM76.
Fw 190D-9 Black 8 W.Nr.500581 6/JG6 landed in Halle on May 6th 1945 and surrendered to the US 7th Armoured Div. This aircraft was very lackluster looking and like the other JG6 aircraft showed signs of operational wear. In many ways it resembled Blue 12,being a Mimetall produced aircraft with pretty much the same type of paint scheme.
Observations and repairs: Some minor repairs to an oleo and patch painted with RLM 76. Under wing hatches puddy lined and extremely dirty fueslage. I was unable to determine as to whether the rear part of the fuselage was painted RLM 76 or Blue Green, so settled for the blue green as this was a color the Mimetall factory used regulary, although 76 was used as well.
Camouflage This aircraft was painted RLM81/82/Green gray with a 76 rudder like all the Doras with soft whisps of applied mottle. Lastly, not mentioned before is,all these Doras were painted with a thin prop spiral that was the signature of Horst Wessel JG6.

Focke-Wulf Fw 190D9 6 Staffel II./JG6 Blue 12 Bar (Blue-12+-) WNr 500570 Galle Germany 1945
FW 190D-9 Blue 12 W.Nr 500570 is a perfect illustration of a late war paint scheme applied by Mimetall. This aircraft has often been mis identified as Black 12 but in actuality this plane was attached to 1st Gruppe 8/JG6 whose numbering and tactical markings were dark blue with a white border.A lot of the confusion probably comes from one of the color photos taken at Furth that has been published over and over again in various not so great tonal quality.
Observations and repairs: Although Blue 12 had a short operational existance it was damaged more than once.
. The entire engine module was taken from a different aircraft.
. Various repair patches which were then covered with red primer.
. Red primer applied to red lifting holes and oleos.
. A metal repair patch affixed under the wing.
. RLM 66 applied around the base of the tailplane.
. Blue grey repair paint on wing leading edge as well as patch spots on the gun cowl.
. A deep scratch over the staboard Swastika which resembles the letter 'F' as well as overpainting on the leading edge of the tail assembly which parially covers the last digit of the W.Nr.
. Lastly,Blue 12 like the other three JG6 aircraft was dirty and extremely muddy on the undersurfaces.Camouflage
The cowling was painted Green Blue and 83 with a thin layer of 81 along the top of the Exhaust pipes and a lot of of light 81 overspray on the top side of the fuselage. There still is some conjecture that the gun cowl was either painted 81 or 83.I have chosen 83 as Jerry Crandell and Tom Tullis now seem to think so. I will include an extra skin with the 81 paint as well. The fuselage top was a dreary scheme of 81 over green Blue 25% of the forward underwing was painted 81,while the rest of the wing area was non painted bare metal. The top wing scheme was an unusual combination of RLM81 and RLM76 .The 81 brought down over the leading edge of the wing and continuing on as the 25% forward underwing color that stopped just rear of the oleos. This scheme was pretty much repeated on other JG6 1st and 2nd Gruppe aircraft in the last remaining months of the war.
Profile: Focke-Wulf Fw 190D-9, W.Nr.500570, from 8./JG6, Fürth-Atzenhof, Germany May 1945. Dominant color was blue green protective color widely used at the same and of the war. Topside of the wings are in the RLM 76 and RLM 81 while the topside of the fuselage are in the RLM 81 and 83 color. Bottom wings are in natural metal and RLM75 with main gear door in the same color.

Gerhard Barkhorn
Gerhard Barkhorn was born on 20 May 1919 at Königsberg in East Prussia. He joined the Luftwaffe in 1937 as a Fahnenjunker. He began his flying training in March 1938 in the pre-war Luftwaffe. On completion of his training he was posted to 3./JG2. On 1 August 1940 Leutnant Barkhorn was transferred to 6./JG52 based on the Channel Front. He flew his initial missions with his new unit during the Battle of Britain but did not confirm any victories during this time. He was, however, shot down into the Channel on one occasion but was rescued unhurt. Barkhorn achieved his first success during his 120th mission on 2 July 1941 over the Eastern Front. Thereafter he was to score steadily, if relatively unspectacularly in comparison to other Eastern Front Luftwaffe aces, achieving his 10th victory on 30 November 1941. On 21 May, Barkhorn was appointed was wounded in combat flying Bf-109F-4 (W.Nr. 13388) 'White 5'.
Staffelkapitän of 4./JG52. Barkhorn was not a prolific scorer; his best single mission netted him four victories, his best day seven victories. In May he recorded seven victories, 16 victories in June and 31 in July, including six on 19 July for his 46th through 51st victories, and five on 20 July (52-56). On 25 July, he was awarded the Ritterkreuz on 23 August 1942 for 64 victories. After a two-month break away from the front he returned in early October. He recorded 14 victories in October, seven in November and 17 in December, including his 100th victory on 19 December. On 11 January 1943, he was awarded the Eichenlaub (Nr 175) when he achieved his 105th victory.
Hauptmann Barkhorn became Gruppenkommandeur of II./JG52 on 1 September 1943, and led it until 15 January 1945. He claimed 24 victories in August, including his 150th on 8 August. He claimed 15 victories in September, 23 in November, including his 200th victory on 30 November 1943, and 28 in December, including seven on 28 December (216-222). On 23 January 1944, Barkhorn became the first fighter pilot to have completed 1,000 combat missions. He achieved his 250th victory on 12 February, the second to do so. He was awarded the Schwertern on 2 March 1944 for 251 victories. Barkhorn's success had not come without some cost. He was shot down nine times in his combat career. He baled out once and was wounded twice. On 31 May 1944, Barkhorn was flying his sixth mission of the day and, being fatigued, was not concentrating on keeping a good look-out when he was bounced by a Russian Airacobra fighter and shot down in Bf-109G-6 (W.Nr. 163195) (<< Black 5). He received severe wounds to his right arm and leg which put him out of action for four months. He returned to combat duty at the end of October. He claimed his 275th victim on 14 November. He recorded his 301st, and last, victory on 5 January 1945.
On 16 January 1945, Major Barkhorn was transferred to take command of JG6 serving on Reichsverteidigung duties based at Posen. He led the unit until 10 April 1945 but was still suffering the effects of his wounds and eventually relinquished command for another spell in hospital. On recovery, Barkhorn joined JV 44 commanded by Generalleutnant Adolf Galland (104 victories, RK-Br) and operating the Me-262 jet fighter. On 21 April 1945, on the last of only two operational missions flying the Me-262, Barkhorn's starboard engine failed. He was obliged to break off an attack on an American bomber formation and return to his base at Riem. He was chased by the USAAF P-51 fighter escort so set about landing his crippled machine in a clearing in some woods. In the resulting crash-landing the cockpit canopy, which he had opened to enable a quick escape, slammed shut on his neck. The incident put him back in hospital and out of the war. Post-war Barkhorn was one of the few noted Luftwaffe Experten who escaped being imprisoned by the Russians. However, he did become a prisoner of war of the Allies, finally being released by them in September 1945. He joined the Bundesluftwaffe in 1956, commanded JaboG31 “Boelcke” and rose to the rank of Generalleutnant. He retired in 1976. On 6 January 1983, during a winter storm on an autobahn near Köln, Barkhorn and his wife, Christl, were involved in a serious automobile accident. Christl died at the scene but Gerhard lingered in a hospital for two days before passing away on 8 January.
Gerhard Barkhorn was credited with 301 victories gained in 1104 missions. All his victories were recorded while flying over the Eastern Front.
List of aerial victories for Luftwaffe ace Gerhard Barkhorn was credited with 301 victories gained in 1104 missions. All his victories were recorded while flying over the Eastern Front.

Hans Dortenmann was born on 11 December 1921 at Weingarten in the Wurttemberg region. He was serving in the army as an infantryman in April 1941 but transferred to the Luftwaffe and underwent flying training. Dortenmann was posted to JG 54 on the Eastern front on completion of his flying training. Leutnant Dortenmann was assigned to 2./JG 54. He gained his first victory on 6 February 1944, when he rammed a Russian La-5 fighter. Dortenmann's Fw 190 A-6 "Black 7" sustained damage to its left wing but he managed to fly back to Orscha-South airfield where he successfully belly-landed. He flew this day as wingmann to Ulrich Wohnert (86 victories, RK) who would confirm Dortenmann's first victory. On 10 June, 2./JG 54 was withdrawn from the Eastern front and relocated to Western front to join III./JG 54. Dortenmann had accumulated 14 (15) victories in the time he had operated over the Eastern front. On 20 June 1944, Dortenmann was appointed Staffelkapitan of 2./JG 54, which on 10 August became 12./JG 54.
Dortenmann was shot down near Paris on 26 June in Fw 190 A-8 "Red 1" but managed to bale out. Over the Invasion front, Dortenmann claimed six Allied fighters shot down. In mid-August, III./JG 54 was withdrawn to Germany to refit. In late September the Gruppe received its first Fw 190 D-9 fighters, becoming operational on 12 October when after only a few weeks of training, at the request of Major Walter Nowotny (258 victories, RK-Br, killed in action 8 November 1944), 9./JG 54 under Oberleutnant Wilhelm Heilmann (34 victories) went to Hesepe and 12./JG 54 under Leutnant Dortenmann went to Achmer to fly airfield protection for the Me 262 jet fighters of Kommando Nowotny, remaining there until 25 December. On 25 December, III./JG 54 was placed under the operation control of Major Karl Borris (43 victories, RK) of I./JG 26 for Operation Bodenplatte. On 29 December, Dortenmann shot down a RAF Spitfire in the Munster area on a day that III./JG 54 lost its Gruppenkommandeur Hauptmann Robert Weiss (121 victories, RK-EL) in addition to 12 other pilots in combat with Spitfires and Typhoons. Dortenmann was named acting Gruppenkommandeur of III./JG 54 on 30 December and remained in this role until 11 February 1945.
On 1 January 1945, Dortenmann led III./JG 54 on Operation Bodenplatte against Brussels-Grimbergen airfield, from which 12 of its 17 pilots that flew the mission failed to return. 12./JG 54 was disbanded on 19 February 1945 with its pilots being distributed throughout the rest of III./JG 54 and Dortenmann taking command of 11./JG 54. On 25 February, III./JG 54 was absorbed into JG 26 with Dortenmann's 11./JG 54 becoming 14./JG 26. On 29 March 1945, Oberleutnant Dortenmann was appointed Staffelkapitan of 3./JG 26. He was awarded the Ritterkreuz on 20 April for 35 victories. During this period he flew 28 ground-attack missions claiming a transport glider, two aircraft, one tank car, seven trucks, three armoured infantry vehicles and an anti-aircraft position destroyed. Dortenmann flew his last combat mission of the war on 27 April and shot down a Russian Yak-3 over Berlin. Hans Dortenmann survived the war but died on 1 April 1973.
In 150 combat missions, Hans Dortenmann was credited with 38 victories. He gained 16 victories over the Eastern front and 22 over the Western front, including one four-engine bomber and six Mustangs. He recorded 18 victories with Fw 190 D-9 (W.Nr. 210 003) making him the most successful fighter pilot with this type.

Heinz 'Negus' Marquardt
Heinz "Negus" Marquardt was born on 29 December 1922 at Braunsberg in East Prussia. A proficient glider pilot pre-war, he joined the Luftwaffe on 1 April 1940. Flieger Marquardt underwent three months of basic military training at Neukuhren in East Prussia before commencing his flying training with Schule / Flieger-Ausbildungs-Regiment 31 at Heiligenbeil on 1 July 1940. On 26 June 1941, he was posted to Jagdfliegervorschule 1, based at Kamenz. Marquart was posted to Jagfliegerschule 5, based at Villacoublay North in France, on 15 September 1941. From 1 February 1942, he was undertaking fighter instructor duties and operating with the Einsatzstaffel of JFS 5 in support of JG 2 and JG 26 in the defence of France over the Channel front. On 1 August 1943, Marquardt was transferred to JG 51, based on the Eastern front. Unteroffizier Marquardt was assigned to 11./JG 51, based at that time at Timminitschi, where he gained his initial combat experiences flying as wing man to Hauptmann Adolf Borchers (132 victories, RK). He gained his first victory, a Russian Il-2 Sturmovik ground-attack aircraft, shot down on 2 October. On 29 April 1944, he shot down three Russian R-5 reconnaisance biplanes to record his 10th through 12th victories. Marquardt shot down three Russian Il-2 Sturmovik ground-attack aircraft on 8 June (20-22). Marquardt was transferred to 10./JG 51 on 17 June 1944. In August, he recorded 21 victories to take his victory total to 55. On 15 August 10./JG 51 was redesignated 13./JG 51. His 60th victory was achieved on 5 September.
Marquardt was awarded the Deutsches Kreuz in Gold on 10 September 1944. In October 1944, 13./JG51 under Leutnant Peter Kalden (69 victories, RK, POW 11 March 1945) claimed 81 victories, of which Marquardt claimed 25, including eight victories on 7 October (64-71). Oberfeldwebel Marquardt was awarded the Ritterkreuz on 18 November 1944 for 89 victories.
In early December 1944, Marquardt was temporarily assigned to the recently formed 15./JG 51. He returned to 13./JG 51 on 1 April 1945. Marquardt claimed 23 victories in April, several while flying Fw190 D-9 "White 11" (W.Nr. 213 097), including his 100th on 14 April and four enemy aircraft shot down on each of the days 18 April (106-109) and 24 April. Marquardt led a formation of six Fw 190 D-9 fighters as top cover for 12 Fw 190 F-8 ground-attack aircraft that were due to land at Schwerin airfield on 1 May 1945. Having taken-off from Neu Redlin, the formation was flying over Lake Schwerin when it was intercepted by six Spitfire XIV of 41 Sqn, RAF. In the subsequent aerial combat Marquardt shot down a Spitfire for his 121st, and last, victory but then he was shot down, baling out wounded. This had been the last of eight occasions on which he had been shot down during his combat career. He landed in the grounds of a hospital where he was able to receive immediate medical attention. A week later, still hospitalised, the war ended and Marquardt became an American prisoner of war. He was transferred to a hospital at Goppingen, near Stuttgart, from where he was discharged 23 August 1945. In 1947, Marquardt left Germany for Switzerland, where he became a flying instructor. He joined the Bundesluftwaffe, with the rank of Leutnant, on its formation in 1956. Over the next 13 years, he fulfilled various posts, including that of Staffelkapitan of JG 73. He retired on 30 September 1973, having risen to the rank of Oberstleutnant. From February 1974 until October 1983, he worked for Condor, a subsidiary airline of Lufthansa. He now lives in retirement in Frankfurt. "Negus" Marquardt achieved 121 aerial victories in 320 combat missions. Remarks: POW 1 January, 1945 (Operation Bodenplatte). He was captured when a partridge lodged in his radiator, as he roared low over Grimbergen airfield. He made a forced landing near the village of Wemmel (Wanmel?). He was nicknamed 'der Rebhuhnäger', the 'Partridge Hunter'. It was his third combat mission, and his D-9 was the first intact model to fall into Allied hands for scrutiny.
Josef 'Pips' Priller
Josef 'Pips' Priller was born on 27 July 1915 at Ingolstadt in Bayern. In 1935, Fahnenjunker Priller was serving in Infanterieregiment 19. Oberfahnrich Priller transferred to the Luftwaffe and began his flying training at Salzwedel in October 1936. On 1 April 1937, Leutnant Priller was posted to I./JG 135. In November 1938 the unit was redesignated I./JG 233 and again on 1 May 1939 to I./JG 51. In July 1939, he was serving with I./JG 71 which was to be redesignated II./JG 51 in October 1939. On 1 October 1939, Priller was appointed Staffelkapitan of 6./JG 51. He gained his first victories on 28 May 1940 over Dunkirk in aerial combat with RAF fighters. He claimed six victories during the French campaign, including his 6th on 25 June, when he shot down a RAF Spitfire fighter near Desvres. By the end of August his victory total stood at 15. On 17 October, Oberleutnant Priller claimed his 20th victory resulting in the award of the Ritterkreuz on 19 October. He claimed at least fourteen victories in the Battle of Britain. On 20 November 1940, Priller was transferred as Staffelkapitan to 1./JG 26, succeeding Oberleutnant Eberhard Henrici (7 victories) who had been lost in aerial combat over the Channel three days previously. Despite much combat with the British, Priller was unable to add to his score before the end of the year. That winter, JG 26 was withdrawn from the Channel front back to Germany for a rest. On his return to the Channel Priller enjoyed a remarkable run of victories between 16 June and 11 July 1941 shooting down 19 RAF aircraft, including 17 Spitfire fighters, to bring his victory total to 39. On 14 July, Priller shot down his 40th victim. He was awarded the Eichenlaub (Nr 28) on 19 October for 41 victories. Hauptmann Priller became Gruppenkommandeur of III./JG 26 on 6 December 1941. By the end of 1941 Priller's score stood at 58. He recorded his 60th victory on 27 March 1942 and his 70th victory on 5 May.
By the end of 1942 Priller had 81 confirmed victories to his tally. On 11 January 1943, Priller became Kommodore of JG 26, replacing Major Gerhard Schopfel (45 victories, RK) who was taking up a staff role. He was awarded the Schwertern (Nr 73) on 2 July 1944. Oberstleutnant Priller brought up his 100th victory on 18 July 1944 when he brought down a USAAF B-24 four-engine bomber. On 1 January 1945, Priller led JG 26 and III./JG 54 in the attack on the Allied airfields, codenamed Operation Bodenplatte, at Brussels-Evere and Brussels-Grimbergen. On 28 January, Priller was appointed Inspekteur der Jagdflieger Ost, a position that required he cease operational flying and which he held until the end of the war. Post-war "Pips" Priller managed the family brewery business. He died on 20 May 1961 at Bobing in Oberbayern following a heart attack.
Josef "Pips" Priller flew 1,307 combat missions to achieve 101 victories. All his victories were recorded over the Western Front and include 11 four-engine bombers. He was the most succesful pilot in battles with Spitfires claiming at least 68 of them.

He then enjoyed spectacular success. He shot down three enemy aircraft on 13 July 1943 to record his 18th through 20th victories, five on 14 August (32-36) and six on 20 August (43-48). From late August 1943, Romm undertook a period of instructing with Erganzung-Jagdgruppe Ost. He returned to 1./JG51 in January 1944. He shot down six enemy aircraft on 5 February (71-76). Oberfeldwebel Romm was awarded the Ritterkreuz on 29 February for 76 victories.
On 1 June 1944, Leutnant Romm was transferred to the Stabsschwarm of IV./JG3 on Reichverteidigung duties. On 7 July, he was appointed Staffelkapitan of 15./JG3. He shot down his first four-engine bomber on 7 July 1944. In all he accounted for eight four-engine bombers while with the unit, including three USAAF B-24s in one attack on 27 September 1944. In November 1944, Romm was transferred to lead 4./JG3 and then to the Stabsschwarm of I./EJG1. Romm was appointed Staffelkapitan of 15./JG3, based on the Eastern front, on 15 January 1945. There the unit undertook fighter-bomber and ground attack missions against the advancing Russian army. Romm was credited with 34 tanks destroyed as well many other vehicles. On 18 February 1945, Oberleutnant Romm became Gruppenkommandeur of IV./JG3, taking over from Major Erwin Bacsila (34 victories, DK). He recorded a further six victories to bring his victory total to 92. Romm's wartime career ended on 24 April 1945, when he was severely injured in a crash-landing when, following aerial combat with Russian Il-2 Sturmoviks south of Stettin, his engine overheated.
Oskar Romm accounted for 92 enemy aircraft in 283 combat missions, including 54 fighter-bomber missions. He recorded 82 victories over the Eastern front including at least 34 Il-2 Sturmovik ground attack aircraft. Of his 10 victories recorded over the Western front, eight were four-engine bombers.

Heinz was seriously wounded in combat on 23 August, 1944 in the 'Yellow 1' in aerial combat with P-51's over Romania, and died of his wounds (complications) years later, 17 June, 1951. The 190D was used to protect the Me 262 from prowling American fighters. His D-9 may have been Werk # 600424 (or 800424), and bore the inscription 'Sell my clothes, I'm going to heaven'.
Heinz "Wimmersal" Sachsenberg was born on 12 July 1922 at Dessau in Sachsen-Anhalt. His uncle, Gotthard Sachsenberg, was a fighter pilot in World War 1 recording 31 victories and receiving the Pour-le-Merite. Following flying training, Sachsenberg was posted to JG 52, based in the southern sector of the Eastern Front, in the autumn of 1942. Feldwebel Sachsenberg was assigned to 6./JG 52. He achieved his first victory on 21 April 1943, when he shot down a Russian Il-2 Sturmovik ground-attack aircraft. By the end of the 1943, he had 52 confirmed victories, including four victories on 26 July to record his 18th through 21st victories, and a further four on 4 August (23-26).
In January 1944, Sachsenberg's Bf 109 G-6 "Yellow 8" was badly damaged by a Russian fighter and he had to crash-land back at his airfield. He just managed to scramble clear of his machine before it exploded. He was recommended for the award of the Ritterkreuz at the end of March after 76 victories but was destined not to receive the award until he had achieved 101 victories. On 7 May, he shot down six Russian aircraft (77-82). He recorded five victories on 8 June (97-101). On 9 June 1944 Fahnenjunker-Feldwebel Sachsenberg was awarded the Ritterkreuz for 101 victories. On 23 August 1944, he was shot down in Bf 109 G-6 (W.Nr. 166 233) "Yellow 1" and badly injured over Romania by USAAF P-51 fighters. On 3 March 1945, he had raised his victory total to 103 victories when he shot down P-51 over Hungary. On 16 April Sachsenberg shot down a P-39 for his 104th and last victory.
Later, Sachsenberg transferred to JG 7 to fly Me 262 jet fighters. Here, he briefly led 9./JG 7 before joining JV 44 in April 1945. Sachsenberg was tasked with setting up a Platzschutzstaffel, flying Fw 190 D-9 fighters, to protect the Me 262s during their most vulnerable phases - take-off and landing. The unit was variously known as the Sachsenberg-Schwarm or the Papagei Staffel. Sachsenberg died of complications from the wounds he received during the war on 17 June 1951.
"Wimmersal" Sachsenberg flew 520 missions in recording 104 aerial victories. All but one of his victories were recorded on the Eastern Front.

Robert 'Bazzi' Weiss
Robert "Bazi" Weiss was born on 21 April 1920 at Baden near Wien in Austria. In 1939, Weiss was serving with a flak regiment but then transferred to the Luftwaffe and learned to fly in 1940. On 1 January 1941, Leutnant Weiss was serving with 6./JG26 on the Channel Front. He recorded his first victory when he shot down a RAF Spitfire fighter between Etaples and Berck on 21 September. In September 1942, Weiss was transferred to JG54. He was assigned to 1./JG54 based on the Eastern Front. By March 1943 he was serving with 3./JG54. On 8 April 1943, Weiss recorded his 30th victory. He was awarded the Ehrenpokal on 8 May. Weiss fell ill in May 1943 and was withdrawn from combat until July when he was appointed Staffelkapitan of 3./JG54. On 2 August 1943, he was awarded the Deutsches Kreuz in Gold. On 11 September, Weiss had to make an emergency landing in Fw 190 A-6 (W.Nr. 530 337) following aerial combat. By the beginning of October he had 68 victories to his credit and had been appointed Staffelkapitan of 10./JG54. Oberleutnant Weiss was awarded the Ritterkreuz for 98 confirmed victories on 26 March 1944.
In May 1944, Weiss was transferred to III./JG54 engaged in Reich Defence. On 6 June the unit was transferred Villacoublay-Sud on the Invasion Front. On 6 June 1944, Weiss was appointed Gruppenkommandeur of III./JG54. Weiss added nine victories to his tally in June. Under leadership of Hauptmann Weiss, III./JG54 was the most successful fighter unit over the Invasion Front, claiming 100 Allied aircraft shot down (100th victory claimed by Feldwebel Wilhelm Muller of Stab III./JG54 on 15 August 1944) for the loss of 50 aircraft in aerial combat. By early August, Weiss was credited with 118 victories. He was the fourth most successful German ace over the Invasion Front. On 16 August, III./JG54 was ordered to withdraw for rest, replenishment and re-equipment with the surviving pilots proceeding by ground transport to Oldenburg. By 25 September, III./JG54 had re-equipped with the Fw 190 D-9, becoming the first operational Gruppe of the Luftwaffe to receive the new type. On 28 September "Bazzi" shot down a Spitfire reconnaissance aircraft of the RAF`s 541 Squadron. The first confirmed victory of the Fw 190D-9. On 29 December 1944, III./JG54 were ordered up against British fighter-bombers in the Osnabruck, Munster and Rheine areas. Weiss led Stab III JG54 and 11./JG54 into a large formation of Spitfires from 331 and 501 Squadrons. During the subsequent aerial combat Typhoons from 168 and 438 Squadrons arrived to re-enforce the British fighters. None of Weiss's Schwarm returned. In the blackest day of JG54 "Grunherz" history, 17 aircraft were lost and 13 pilots, including Weiss, were killed and two pilots were injured while claiming six RAF fighters. It is assumed that Weiss was shot down in Fw 190 D-9 (W.Nr. 210 060) "Black 10" by F/Sgt Haanes of 331 (Norwegian) Squadron, RAF. During this engagement he achieved one further victory that due to lack of witnesses was credited to a nearby Flak unit. He was posthumously awarded the Eichenlaub (Nr. 782) on 12 March 1945.
'Bazi' Weiss is credited with 121 aerial victories in 471 missions. 26 of his victories were scored over the Western Front. Included in his total are 40 Sturmoviks, 12 Spitfires and five Lightnings.
