Profile 00: Kittyhawk I AL173 of No 2 Sqn SAAF. flown by Lt Vernon Lindsay, Gambul. Libya 1 June 1942 A long-serving member of No 2 Sqn SAAF. Lindsay evemualty gained lour and two shared kills HIs first claim was on 7 June when, flyrng this aIrcraft near Blf Hachelm. he encountered four Bf 109s. In the resulting combat Lindsay hit one which he claimed as damaged. His first confirmed success came a week laler. AL 173 laler served with No 73 OTU on training duties untlt struck off charge on 22 February 1945.

Kittyhawk SAAF 4Sqn KJH Pilot John Waddy ET512 Egypt 1942

Profile 00: Kittyhawk IA ET512 of No 4 Sqn SAAF, flown by Flg Off John Waddy, LG 97, Egypt. 21 July 1942. After serving with Nos 250 and 260 Sqns. in which he claimed 11.5 kills, Australian John Waddy jomed No 4 Sqn SAAF in July 1942 and remained with it until early October. He made his lirst claim with the unit on 21 July when, flying ET512 on a bomber escort mission, he was credited with a probable dunng combat with Bf l09s. ET512 did not last long, however, crash landmg with combat damage on 8 August.

Curtiss P-40M Kittyhawk SAAF 5Sqn Shirley III at LG 121 Egypt 1941 IWM CM2515

Photo: Lieutenant R Pare of No. 5 Squadron SAAF, sitting in the cockpit of his Curtis Tomahawk "Shirley III" at LG 121, Egypt. Pare joined the South African Permanent Force and attended the Military College as a Cadet. He was commissioned in the SAAF in April 1940 and posted to No. 1 Squadron SAAF, seeing action over East Africa until April 1941. After a period as an instructor in the Union, he joined 5 Squadron in December 1941. He was promoted commander of 'B' Flight on 31 May 1942, but was shot down and killed by Oberleutnant Hans-Joachim Marseille of I/JG27 near Bir Hacheim on 3 June, just after scoring his sixth victory.
