Grumman F4F-4 Wildcat VF-41 Black 12 flown by Lt(jg) Charles "Windy" Shields from USS Ranger during Operation Torch in Nov 1942. Officially credited with two kills during the Torch Landings and awarded the Silver Star, it is believed Shield actually destroyed four aircraft. Photo 01:The French battleship Jean Bart was sunk at her moorings in Casablanca harbor on 8 Nov 1942 by SBDs from VS-41 from the USS Ranger. Photo 02: Other Vichy French warships and frieghters were sunk or beached as a result of combined SBD bombing and F4F strafing. The units involved were VS-41 and VF-41 from USS Ranger and TBF Avengers of VGS-27 from USS Sunwanee.
